Can anyone recommend a good boardgame?
Can anyone recommend a good boardgame?
I don't mean games like Monopoly, Yahtzee or Life, I mean deep, strategy boardgames like Tide of Iron and Settlers of Catan. I've been thinking of buying Tide of Iron and Settlers of Catan just to see if this genre of cool looking board games are as fun as they look. This is a new venture for me and was wondering if anyone plays these types of games and can suggest one.

Catan is awesome. Best boardgame I own. Get Catan and the expansions.
Money well spent. If you have a 360 you can get the trial of the electronic version of catan on XBLA. It also teaches you how to play and it's a pretty good tutorial as well.

You can try a dos version of Catan here:

It is one of the standout euro titles that most everyone likes. Im not a ToI fan but thats probably because I really like the campy style that Memoir 44 has - its quick, easy to teach, cheap, and fun - whats not to love?
The question is, would you rather play a Euro styled game or an American one. Euro ones are usually more conversationally related and less confrontation, while American ones like to smother you with pieces and dice. Typical examples are Catan for Euro and Risk for "Ameritrash" - though there are far more and better examples.
Personally I am a heavy American styled gamer, but I still think the best game is Dune, however you wont get a copy of that for cheap.
If nothing else browse Board Game Geek (BGG) for alittle while looking at pictures and see if something strikes your fancy. They are one of the most friendly communities I have ever encountered. You can still ask here if you want, my next response will be less scatter brained - I wont have a child nearby...

Settlers of Catan is a good place to start. It's probably the biggest Euro or German style board game, and a gateway for most people. I'd start with that, and then go for the Cities and Knights expansion when you've mastered the original. I never much liked the 5-6 player expansion as it seems to break the balance of the game. Also I didn't care much for Seafarers, that's just my preference as I know many people who prefer it to Cities and Knights.
Carcassonne is another fairly easy game. I play it with my family and friends who are more casual gamers. I bought the Big Box, which has all the main expansions with it, but you could just start with the basic game to see if you like it. You place tiles down and then have the option to place followers as well. When structures on the map are completed, whoever has the most followers on them gains points.
Puerto Rico, is more cerebral. There's no chance, so seasoned players will have memorized the iideal play and crush you. Usually the other player's aren't performing optimally, or have grudges to settle, so you still have to think.
Reiner Knizia's "Samurai" is one of my favorites. You place counters over a map of Japan and try and control one of three resources. You always have options, and long term strategies to follow, but there's never so much information that it's paralyzing. Behind Settlers this has been an enduring favorite for us.
Try that for a start. Personally I'd love to keep expanding my game collection, but finding people in my area to play is difficult.
www.boardgamegeek.com has a wealth of information.
www.thoughthammer.com is the place to buy games. Their prices are generally better than anywhere else I've seen. If anyone knows a better spot please chime in.
Good luck. Board games are a blast with the right crowd and a tremendous value.

My favorite board games are Heroscape, Settlers of Catan, and Carcassonne. I cannot recommend Heroscape enough. I bought it on a whim a few years ago and have never been happier with a purchase. It's great right out of the box, but if you really love the game there are plenty of expansions that can add to the experience (although the 1st Master Set, called Rise of the Valkyrie, will keep you busy for dozens of plays). No game is ever the same. There is a great online community at http://www.heroscapers.com.
