but seriously why is it that half of the country will know what you mean if you say soda or pop even if you are in a place that uses the other but when you go to these backwards coke saying places they have no idea what either means?

Here everyone just says Coke, or more likely asks for Dr. Pepper by default and that just means whatever cola is on tap. People will specifically say Cherry Coke, Sprite, or whatever if they mean something else. If it is a restaurant that serves Pepsi products you'll get the apologetic "I'm sorry, is Pepsi/Sierra Mist ok?"

If they ask me if Pepsi is ok, I ask if its ok if they don't get a tip.

Seriously though, offering Pespsi? Blegh.
