Double bill of Maleficent which was kinda tosh and Godzilla which was pretty good.

Maleficent is a story that doesn't need to be told and in telling it the writers have inserted some really uncomfortable subtext. Everything is rendered in that horrible shiny CGI that blighted the Tim Burton Alice In Wonderland as well. I don't get who this movie is for: the creatures in it are so ugly you couldn't market them to kids but then it's too kiddy for teens and too boring for adults. More fun was thinking up which Disney bad-guy might get their own film next. My money is on Jafar who leads a peasants uprising against the feckless Sultan and his spoiled brat daughter. Topical.

Godzilla's trailer has mis-sold the final product and it walked the line a few times trying to be clever when it should have just shown the action. Overall though I found it moved at a decent pace, the middle section wasn't as boring as people have made out and the final monster duel was spectacular. Lieutenant White-Guy is a lazily written character who just happens to keep being where the monsters are and I think, like Man of Steel, the attempts to explain Godzilla's power ends up asking more questions than answers but it's nice to see some big-budget stuff actually being framed so I can see the scale of action sequences. Some of it was almost like Spielberg. Almost.

I watched Thor Dark World in 3d. I got a nice new, big screen tv with 3d capabilities and wanted to try them out. I hear a lot of people say the 3d in this movie isn't good. Maybe it's cause I'm new to the whole 3d movie thing, but I thought the 3d effects were pretty cool. Apparently, Gravity is the movie I need to see in 3d though from everything I'm hearing. As for Thor Dark World - it's fun, but nothing special. I would give it a mild thumbs up. Agents of Shield made me want to catch up on all these Marvel movies since a lot of them tie into the show

I also watched Frozen, since Once Upon a Time's season finale set the internet ablaze with the appearance of a character from that movie, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It was a good movie. There was lots of good comedy bits and the film is gorgeous (and I wasn't even watching it in 3D, though I plan to)

Reading this post of mine, I'm kind of amazed by how ABC television viewing is starting to affect my movie watching

I gave up on ONCE awhile ago, but I'm curious what character from Frozen it was?

The character pops up in the last few minutes. It's basically a tease for next season. Check it out:

Good god, you know, I don't even watch the show, but I didn't realize how many of my friends watched ONCE until the season finale aired and I logged on to Facebook only to see a veritable wall of links to that video. For a brief moment I thought Facebook had had a stroke

HA! That's exactly what I said when Kit showed me the trailer. (Neither of us watch the show, but she also witnessed Facebook's "stroke" when the trailer came out)

Yeah Once Upon a Time is....I feel... god awful! My wife and I tried to get into it when it started and it was alright, but slowly degraded into a twisted, convoluted mess of cheezy, hamfisted melodrama. I noticed that the majority of prime time ABC shows are just genre varied versions of a soap opera and this is no different. It is just a series of fairy tale characters with emotional baggage. As if somehow Lost had sex with Disney.
