I dont think you were paying close enough attention to the character this season or maybe the show glosses over it more compared to the books, but, this was all about revenge. His whole reason for fighting him was to seek revenge for his sister, and get the Mountain to admit what he did to implicate Tywin. He also didnt just want him to die, he wanted him humiliated and to suffer. If he was just being Tyrion's champion and was only trying to win, sure he would've killed him on the spot.
Oh yeah, I definitely got that. However, he also has a 6-foot stick with a pointy metal triangle at the end. No reason for him to be so close. You can humiliate people from 5 feet away, that's for sure.

Apparently it makes a lot more sense in the books from what I hear:
apparently his spear breaks, and he has to get close to use the Mountain's sword to kill him or something?
Now, THAT makes a bit more sense. Maybe it was just not-great execution on the part of the show. But... Yeah, no, I just can't believe it. Didn't make sense in my head, and still doesn't.

he's just drunk with revenge and loses his edge. that's all. we only get a limited idea of what he's capable of in the show, but he definitely owns the fight up until the mountain is on his back, then he just goes nuts, when he should have just killed him.

semi related, if i never have to see someone's teeth scatter across the ground ever again i'll be really happy. yeesh.

Regardless of my disagreement with the rest of the statement being a possibility, I can wholly agree with this.

He seemed to be a pretty good sport about it though :p

catnip, there is also another reason why he thinks he is incapacitated, and the mountain is nigh inhuman. Yeah I guess he also used the sword in the book. But his spear was chopped in half in the show

But he gets another one! And maybe. Maybe. Still smells fishy to me.
