You get lots of feathers when you really want shells.

(My Mario Kart history isn't very deep.)
It was just in the first one. It was a super hop basically, and could let you cut corners or dodge shells if you timed it right.

I think jumping gaps/barriers would be more difficult to manage once things weren't just Mode 7.
Ah, in the original. Dont remember too much about that one and I've never played MK64 or DS.

I liked how you could jump off the track. And IIRC, there was one battle stage that you could jump into the islands of water to pickup items.

Jumping off tracks to avoid red shells in battle mode. That would piss people off. Wow, just realized how long Mario Kart has been around. Look at all the knock offs since. Though I thought CTR got it right too.

The super jump still existed in Mario Kart 64.....in a strange way. By hopping a lot, using mushroom boosts and getting hit by a head-on collision with a shell can launch you into the air and placing you on hard to reach areas like the giant penguin island in Sherbet Land or into the bat spewing mimic in Banshee Boardwalk, a place which, by the way which the Lakitu will not fix your position for you.

Those were the days...I wish we could do that with this one...but nooooooo can't make a uturn without being automatically righted.

The GIFs people are making from this game are killing me. Especially anything with DK's ridiculous facial expressions.

Yep! I find it funny that the the game most people were anticipating, Watch Dogs, ended up having controversial videos of people shooting people of certain sexualities, race and religions, but good ol' mario kart came out as internet meme fuel...I bet you that it will have influenced people to have bought the game.
