in fairness, wouldn't you put Body Count closer to metal than hip hop?

I would. But Body Count isn't on the archives for whatever reason. Ice-T is only there due to his guest performances with Six Fear Under, Motörhead, and others...

Body Count isn't listed because Metal Archives is full of neckbeard IMNs who don't know what the fuck is up.

they get really weird and arbitrary around anything 'edge case'

I mean a lot of grindcore bands seem to be added/not added almost at random for example. They'll claim it's a case of a band being "more metal than not" but that's not exactly something you can objectively measure.

I used to be all into that "THIS IS/ISN'T METAL" distinction but I just don't give a shit anymore

Same here. Tr00ness is a disease. Glad I cured myself of that one.

I like the Metal Archives. It's the first resource I turn to when looking up info on metal bands. I think the band pages are much more user-friendly compared to sites like discogs, RateYourMusic, etc.

There is certainly an air of elitism when it comes to accepting certain bands - especially those "borderline" ones, but I kinda get why they do it. They want to maintain a site dedicated to one genre and don't want to open the floodgates to anything and everything that's "almost" or "mostly" metal.

Grindcore is a strange case as you have some bands that are clearly metal, those that are way more crust punk influenced, and others that fall somewhere in between. Metalcore is another weird gray area (Acme and Starkweather are accepted but Converge isn't - wut?!). It does seem like they sometimes are rejecting an inordinate number of these types of bands, and I get a feeling the moderators aren't exactly fans of those genres.

I do like how stringent they are when accepting album reviews. Keeps spam and bullshit off the site.
