Of course not the worst idea ever...but a pretty silly idea nonetheless. It's trendy thinking and will probably be showcased (with diverted public funds) at some place like the future UC Berkeley road to nirvana flora and fauna international peace gardens, but it simply isn't practical. Just like Dippin Dots, the ice cream of the future...for 30 years...just isn't practical, as neat as it might be in theory.

That picture, with miles and miles of 6-lane interstate in each direction is insanity. I don't know the numbers on these panels, but I know the numbers on traditional solar panels, and the technology sounds the same, so I think we can safely assume prices will be in the same ballpark. You are easily going to spend 10x, maybe 100x, the price per square foot of roadway that WE already spend.

This doesn't touch on practicality. I'm glad they've "weighload" and "impact" tested these. Now test them against gum, sand, salt, black ice, scraping metal, and non-stop traffic for years on end.

Cool, but still silly idea.

Thank you SpaceBooger for referencing the site and not simply asking flex if you could poop in flex's shoes. You are a better person than I.

edit: nvm wasn't flex who said it lol

Edit2: what would be the purpose of sand/salt on the roads if they're kept above freezing, though? I can see the cost concern, though, certainly.

Yea I clarified that I meant on ks which the thread and ks is all about, ideas. But yea the federal government or maybe it was just my state gave a ton of money to some solar companies that ended up going under. I don't really have any confidence in this being anything but another cash grab to prey on people that think it's a great idea.

With the amount of research they have done doesn't answer real world questions though. You think Atlanta's two inches of snow was bad imagine that every time it rains.

You can poop in my sandals then I might actually wear them. I can't stand them flapping around. It's like going commando for your feet.

Unless every single road in the country is covered with these things, it will get on them eventually and even then people will come on them from off road. A saving grace to the situation would be that one can be replaced relatively quickly without interfering with the others, if I am reading correctly

Even though it already reached its goal and not gaming related, I wanted to post this. I for one am glad that my kids will have access to Reading Rainbow. I wish it was available for streaming services somewhere but this will do for now
I wish I saw this earlier. The personalized headshot autograph is all gone :(
I have one somewhere. He was our neighbor at Dragoncon a couple years ago and more often than not we shared an elevator with him. We invited him over to watch the the costume contest when we were having a party and he showed but had dinner reservations.
Woo! They bumped up the max numbers on several of the rewards, so I was able to bump up my pledge and get one. I don't think they anticipated making their total in 11 hours and doubling it in 25 hours.

I didn't see this solar road stuff until right now ...
that really seems overtly complicated. It'd make more sense to do something based off kinetic or thermal energy gathering.

Using carbon nanotube fabric you can make thermally conductive surfaces (even clothing), and there's other materials which it works with as well. Where, as long as one surface is hotter than another, you will be able to get a current off of it.

You add in a kinetic system where the road, on a nano scale, vibrates from the motion of vehicles, and store that energy too.

After that point, you could also design a magnetic energy distribution system that could be built into the road, and used on compatible vehicles. So that either the road could charge the vehicle or the vehicle could pay some energy tax to the road.

There's lots of simpler ways to get energy out of a roadway than slapping down solar panels. There's lots of better places to put solar panels anyway, like on roof tops.

But high impact heavy traffic areas ... man, they don't even use concrete anymore because it's too expensive, they use slurry and tarmac. Anything that could be used would have to be compatible with the current spending habits.
There's a lot more games I recognize that were kickstarted than I thought there would be. Very interesting.

Uh how has this not been posted here yet? KS for Midora a LoZ: Minish Cap inspired game. I really want to see this succeed but I'm not sure if it will since it needs 17.5k in about 8 days. Either way I'm ploping down some money to try and get it there.
