Yes I am 28 and I watch DBZ.. big whoop :P
Hey no one's judging here  in fact that's one of the several animes that got me into anime  To be honest it was a combination of these that got me into anime: hamtaro, sailor moon, dbz, yugioh, and pokemon(and a little one piece need to catch up on that and fairy tail)
I know no one is judging :D Sailor Moon and DBZ were the first animes I ever watched. Back when they were on really early in the morning when I was in 5th grade.

For me it was Sailor Moon and DBZ to start, but what really sucked me in was when Toonami got Gundam Wing.

Same here. I grew up watching Sailor Moon, DBZ and Digimon. The final nails for me after watching Gundam Wing were Trigun and .hack//. After that I tried to find as many dubbed series as possible. I only had one other friend really interested in anime outside of DBZ. He and I watched Wolf's Rain on Adult Swim at night, and then talk about it during school the next day. Miss those days.

Now that I'm done with Log Horizon, I'm having a hard time figuring out what to watch next. A lot of people have recommended watching Attack on Titan. I haven't done any research on it yet, but it might be next in line. Also thinking of checking out Accel World, since it seems very similar to what I've been watching already.

Classic Series:
Trigun
Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop

Those are the 3 series that come to my mind when I think of just all around GREAT anime series. Not necessarily the top 3 of all time or in any particular order though.

If more episodic, maybe Mushi-Shi or Ergo Proxy.

Guess it just depends on what you're looking for in it. Atmosphere, pacing, having a series-long question to solve, etc.
I agree about Mushi-Shi and Death Note. Those are two of the best examples I can think of for a dectective/thriller anime and L is one of the best characters ever, seriously.

You can also check out Psycho Pass, Darker than Black, When they Cry, Mirai Nikki.
If you want a detective anime series, try Detective Conan (now up to 600+ episodes) or The File of Young Kindaichi. Each has its own charm. The early episodes of Detective Conan was dubbed by Funimation (who totally screwed up in marketing since it is a really good show) while later ones are fansub easy. While there is a TON of filler episodes, any site should be able tell you which episodes you SHOULD watch for the story. The File of Young Kindaichi is on Crunchyroll right now with "The File of Young Kindaichi Returns" since the original anime ended. I'm really liking Returns since you don't need to know anything about the original episodes to get caught up in them (since Returns is all I've seen). Of course, it isn't a thriller anime but I thought I'd at least chime in on those.
Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll start with Monster but I'll look into the others as well.

Ding Ding Ding.

OH GOD, starter anime... hearing those reminds me why I got into anime in the first place (though granted I got way deeper into the fandom from cons to cosplay from my ex). It was a mix of Sailor Moon and Pokemon. I also remember getting random VHS tapes from Suncoast at the time. I also remember watching the series late night on HBO and Cinamax. However, it was the early Adult Swim that got me hooked. Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo and Yu Yu Hakusho that allowed me to find out more about anime. I still own my first ever Outlaw Star DVD that I got. It was that DVD that started the path towards becoming an anime fan.

Just watched about 10 episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho with a buddy last night. It was amazing. There may be "better" anime out there, but YYH will always be my favorite.
Final Fantasy IX is the best one
