Yeah I was gonna say, compared to most of Europe we've got cheap gas in the US because of government subsidies, last I knew they paid the equivalent of like $7-10 a gallon. Hell, it's even cheaper than Canada, whenever I go up there I always make sure to fill my tank before I cross the border, because it's the equivalent of like $5-5.50 a gallon there.

Now, to be fair, most of Europe has excellent public transportation compared to the US, and has way less urban sprawl than we do, so they can get away with driving a whole lot less, but the point still stands.

Yeah. I can't pull that one off. Won't even try.

That said, I've had the same haircut for too long. Time to switch it up. Or down. It's just hair after all. It'll grow back.

I got the four door. When I was in college I had a Subaru Outback and I've definitely missed the cargo space (would have saved a lot of money not having to use Ikea home delivery for some of my furniture items).

I went to a Subaru dealership today. They were closed (Memorial Day) but luckily the doors were unlocked on all the right cars. I sat in a 4 and 5 door Impreza and a Crosstrek. The Crosstrek is kinda neat, but ultimately I think it's gonna be between the 4 and 5 door Impreza. I REALLY like the way the sedan looks, but the hatch would benefit me a lot. So that's the conundrum. At this point I'm kinda leaning toward the 5 door. Functionality is more important than appearance, and I figure in time I'll just get used to the way it looks. But I still have something like 6 months to decide.

Why don't American's opt for diesel cars to save on gas , like Europeans do?

Diesel is more expensive and can be harder to find in the US, since most (if not all) of the trucking industry uses it.

I stopped at a truckstop this morning to get enough to get through the day, 87 octane was $3.60, diesel was $3.85.

It is, but the cars are more expensive. So while it is more efficient, your breakeven point is farther down the line.

Americans are fine with diesel for trucks. However there were many really terrible attempts at making passenger cars in the 70s and 80s that cause quite a few buyers to be biased against them. Obviously there were old Mercedes diesels that were loved and there is more acceptance of VW TDI vehicles here. But mostly Americans have it stuck in their mind that diesel equals trucks spewing black smoke.
