Latest news about Amazon pre-orders from HK Mktg:

Hello Friends,
I'd like to give an update about Amazon. There is still a chance that those with Amazon preorders will get their units on June 6th. The reason there is no clear yes or no answer is because Amazon has not gotten in contact with us since mid April in regards to finalizing their order with us. It's our hope that Amazon customers will receive their units soon, but nothing can move forward unless they make contact with us again and finalize their order. We are prepared to send units to them on short notice.

Also, we speak with two Amazon reps when they do business with us. It's unlikely that their customer service know any details about our relationship. It's also unlikely they would speak much on the matter even if they did. Amazon is usually fine talking about their relationship with their own customers(You), but I doubt they would share intimate details about their relationship with a supplier.

Which is why I got a similar response from my inquiry about Newegg preorders just now (from newegg.com customer service):

Thank you for your information and I would be glad to help you with that. I show the ETA release date is 5/30. Please note that we will not process, charge or ship a pre-order until all items on the pre-order are in stock. An item's ETA is subject to change without notice.

So Newegg still says May 30th (which it won't be), and I have a feeling that will be updated in the next week to reflect Hyperkin's release date.

At this point, looks like us pre-order folks will have to just roll the dice, shoot an arrow in the sky, whatever.

I too have been too far deep in the stench of entitled gamers just reading that Facebook every day. I can't wait to finally pull myself out of it with the help of my Retron 5, whenever it comes.

HK Mktg: Good news everyone. Most everyone in the office was called out into the warehouse to assist. We were swamped because Amazon just got moving. We packed a ton of grey RetroN 5s. I don't know how it was resolved. I just got back to my desk, and now it's time to go home. Enjoy your weekend everyone.

It looks like Amazon finally realized they needed to fill their preorders, and if you go to their site, they officially changed the Retron 5's release date to June 6.

Now let's hope all the other online retailers follow suit

But just in case you don't want to wait, you can get one now for twice the price + shipping! Let the gouging begin!

HK Mktg: I do know that the grey and black units are separate orders. I do not know if they will get black by the 6th. I hope I can clarify more on Tuesday when I'm back in the office.

This guy seems to be answering a lot more questions faster and more truthfully than anyone at Hyperkin ever has over the past few months. I'm sure more information about online orders will become available as we get closer to the 6th.

As always, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the updates, and this review is much better than the one from IGN. This guy actually did his research and seemed to focus on the shortcomings of the console. Almost everything he pointed out could be fixed with software updates, so hopefully Hyperkin will address these problems in the near future.

For $99, I'd still say this is worth it. If I had to pay $140, I'd cancel my order and wait a while.

The niggling save file thing where the Retron 5 can't identify the cartridge is my only big concern. Other than that I'm pretty excited.

Almost everything he pointed out could be fixed with software updates, so hopefully Hyperkin will address these problems in the near future.

Exactly. I'm not worried about the little pressing issues, that's what the firmware updates are for, and it was a smart idea to actually have a way to implement them through an SD card slot. I'm sure they're not gonna let any issues go, they said in numerous interviews if enough people report a problem they're gonna take care of it. In fact, they're already looking into the Street Fighter Alpha 2 (SNES) issue that was mentioned in the review.
