Is it okay that we allow RGB, region, CD-R and other mods? On one hand it's destroying original hardware, but on the other hand it's turning it into something more valuable that people want and is disclosed at the point of sale. Is there any similarity here to bootlegs?
Should we disallow console mod sales? Should we condemn people when they show up with a handheld PS2 project or a NES shelled piggy bank in the modding forum? After all, it is tainting hardware that could someday be scarce.

i, for one, do not give a flying fuck about any of this, so i've largely stayed out of it, but i think that it is never wise to give an entity that provides a space for commerce full reign to dictate the microtransactions that occur within the marketplace.

aaron - Amen.
Bone - You'd be okay with ROM hacks/translations/etc. in original cartridges as long as they booted into Madden or whatever the donor is as well?

Bone is against any repros at all, even Maddens are sacred, but my question to him is what if you kept the madden rom chip, then theoretically if you ever wanted to you could convert it back to the Madden game that it was.Omerta wrote:Bone - You'd be okay with ROM hacks/translations/etc. in original cartridges as long as they booted into Madden or whatever the donor is as well?

if only there were a way to convert PS2 copies of Madden 2002 into PCE Sapphire bootlegs

And that's fine if he is against them. I'm just pointing out the inconsistency between a commonly held belief that cartridges are sacred and hardware isn't.

Speaking of bootlegs...is there a good place to buy obvious bootleg games online?
A few years ago, I saw a copy of Contra Force for the GBA. (Seriously...it had the Contra Force (NES) cover art on the front, and it booted directly to a Contra Force (NES) ROM. It was like a lost "NES Classics" game!) I passed on it since it was obviously a bootleg, but I regret doing so now...
