Holy SHIT Fantasy Zone is hard.

I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Are there certain upgrades that are mandatory if you want to beat the game? I'm never sure what to buy in the shops.

No idea. That game is super hard, and I have never made it very far.

That said, your reference to "the shops" reminded me of Opa Opa's birlliant "all star move" in Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing:

That game is Sega fan service incarnate...

Cute video.

But as for this game, it may be the one I abandon.

Any sort of offensive weapon is time-limited anyway. I believe movement upgrades are permanent for as long as you live.

^ Yeah I did some further research and that seems to be the case.

Though supposedly the two most expensive speed upgrades make the ship extremely hard to control.

Anyone know if the SMS version is any easier than the arcade?

Master System version is easier than Arcade, but still balls hard.

Early in the game, just buy double bombs and big wings. Double bombs will help you take out pods fast, and big wings make you not slow as shit whilst not making you go out of control.

Save up for the better engines before buying anything else. If you buy all engines at once and then buy a weapon (definitely the 7 way shot, best one), the weapon becomes permanent. Be sure to choose Big Wings when you leave the shop though, or you'll go way too fast.

Heavy Bombs are the only upgrade i'd buy other than that. They 1 hit kill anything they hit - including bosses if you hit their weak point with it. In the SMS version at least you can one hit kill about 80% of the bosses with heavy bombs, and 2 hit kill most of the rest.

Don't die at all once you've bought the upgrades - you croak and it's gone, and you won't be able to afford it twice.

Anyway, played more Symphony of the Night tonight. Explored the outer wall and long library, then tried to go into the clock tower but couldnt progress. I'm assuming I need the bat form (no luck finding this yet). I did get some upgrades though that let me explore the basement (the water here hurts me though, think I need to find something so I can swim (or at least not be hurt underwater?).

Fought a boss whilst I was down there, then climber the west side of the castle and am making my way through the belfrys now. Just killed boss #4. Bosses I've fought are in spoilers:
Boss 3: A woman with dog faces and giant serpent tentacles in the basement. She attacked with bubbles (how fearsome!)

Boss 4: A hippogriff. I always wondered if these were just a Harry Potter thing. Guess not! He was pretty unimpressive for a fourth boss tbh.
And my stats and stuff:
Alucard level 17
HP: 142, MP: 95, Heart: 97
Equipment: Basilard (all the more powerful swords are too slow, so this outdamages them), Knight Shield, Bandanna, Silver Plate, Crystal Cloak.
Relics: Soul of Wolf, Cube of Zoe, Spirit Orb, Faerie Scroll, Jewel of Open, Merman Statue

Thanks for the tips.

I've been getting MURDERED in this game. Made it as far as the level 3 boss.

Yeeeeaaaahhhh after sinking in a few hours into it this evening I can tell y'all - Fantasy Zone ain't happening.

Not only is it a hard game, but it's a bad game. The design is completely haphazard, just a bunch of shit flying everywhere. How this became a "Sega classic" is beyond me.

I looked up some YouTube playthroughs for perhaps a bit of assistance and found nothing but MAME savestate a-holes. Lovely.

I'd rather play Final Fantasy XIII than another second of this.

Since the summer is still young (when does this Challenge end anyway?) I'm gonna replace Fantasy Zone - with Symphony of the Night.

Good call. SOTN is so, so awesome. (Reading about alienjesus playing it make me want to play thorugh it a fifth time.)
