We're not quite that bad here. $250K would get you 1/4 acre empty lot in my neighborhood, but if you go a mile up the road to one of our "transitional" neighborhhoods, $250K would get you a large "fixer-upper".BoneSnapDeez wrote:My wife's parents just sold their little home on a .5 acre lot for almost half a million. That was suburban Mass. tho.
Also...congrats! Owning a home is a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it.

Also, $250k would get you a very nice house in any suburb here. Maybe not a huge one or a huge lot, but definitely very nice. You can get reasonably nice houses in most suburbs, or the high rent area of the city, in the $100-150k neighborhood.
Hell, I'm in a $50k house (appraised closer to 60, but I got a deal) and for 1 person it's perfectly fine. Cute little cape cod. Technically it's in the city, but it's literally 3 streets from the suburban border and there's very little crime there (I should know, I work at our 911 center).

Where are you at, Dave?
Also, saw your finance post last night, but too tired to comment at the time.
I binge a lot too and it's always the same thing, just get away from the good habits temporarily, and that's just a recipe for getting a dentist bill, license plate renewal, car insurance bill, and a luxury tax of $75 all at the same time. Sounds like you're on top of it and can reign it back in. I'll do my best to not tempt you in the meantime

I am Upstate/Western NY -- Rochester, to be specific. It lands about midway between Syracuse and Buffalo, which are far more well known owing to the whole Sports Team thing.
Great little city in my eyes. Only real reason anyone might know about us is because it's the birthplace/HQ of Kodak and Xerox. Also Paychex, but I don't know if that's really well known outside of the northeast. And (if you for some reason follow grocery store news, I feel at least one member on here does) Wegman's, consistently rated as the top grocery store in the nation, as well as top 10 places to work for over the past like decade or more. And Bausch & Lomb used to be HQ'd here but I'm reasonably certain they've moved on.
And your restraint is appreciated
It's why I was TOTALLY fine with you saying you were gonna pass on that one offer we were talking about. I mean, I was in, but I reeeeally shouldn't have. Right now my only outstanding deals (committed but not paid) are shipping for yours, and the STV mobo group buy that I think I'm going to be in the second wave of so I have a while.
Just gotta scrape by until July at the latest. If I can't get on top of things by then, the extra paycheck that month will help zero it out.

I know Rochester, NY quite well. My wife's grandfather in fact was a big shot w/Kodak and she still has family there...and a great deal of her family is in Rochester, MN as well.
My wife is spewing her Rochester knowledge right now
(Sibley's, Wegman's Grocery, Seacrest supper club, and the best ice cream in the world at Carvel's)

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Hah! Nice. Sadly Sibley's closed years ago.. I will agree with her about Carvel's though. That was actually my first job back when I was 16, at the "main" location at Hudson and Ridge (most people here didn't realize it was a chain). Was owned by an older (70's) jewish guy who was like the antithesis of all the stereotypes. Dude paid me 8 bucks an hour in 98 to scoop ice cream, routinely gave ice cream cakes to anyone working on holidays, birthday and christmas bonuses (to the extent that my first year of college, I stopped in to buy an ice cream cake for my dad's birthday over christmas break, he goes "Ohhh David I was hoping you'd come in, there's something for you in the back room!" and he's got a $100 bonus for me when I hadn't worked there in 3 months)... The tradeoff (otherwise I'd probably STILL be working there) was the guy couldn't handle the concept of a schedule. If you were LUCKY, the schedule was made 3 days in advance. You were essentially on call all the time -- but it was awesome for a geeky HS senior just lookin for spare money.mjmjr25 wrote:I know Rochester, NY quite well. Edit: Also, I feel as though we've had this conversation before... But what do I know, I'm usually waking up around this time

In my neck of the woods $250k will get you a 10-15 acre plot with a 2000+sq foot house and atleast one outbuilding - usually a detached garage or a tobacco barn.
Granted if you travel twenty miles north that will get you a 1 acre plot and same sized house, no outbuilding.
