They cost more because people will pay more. And sometimes people don't make sense.

No game is that good. $60 can buy the newest latest game with millions spent on development. It can also buy many other things. $200 for a game? Kidding right?

You're kidding, right?

There are plenty of games worth $200+, just because they are that good.

Little Samson is actually a very fun game. It has its flaws, but I actually prefer its approach to some things over Mega Man.

Little Samson is a game that can be emulated, so its hard to argue its worth the money to another person, for just the game. If you are a big fan of that style of game, and want to play Little Samson, maybe it would be worth it to you? Its also worth keeping in mind that the game is not likely to decrease in value. You bought it for $200, you could very well play it, get the full experience on original hardware, and turn around and sell it for little loss, if any.

There are games, though, that cannot, or have not been emulated. If you want to play one of these games, money is the last thing that matters. As I said earlier, I would take out a loan to purchase a Mushihimesama Futari Red Label PCB. I would not resell the game, nor would I buy it for "status" or whatever. I would play that damn game every day, and I would be happy purchasing it for pretty silly prices. If I had the money, $3k would be nothing to drop on that board, I'd not even think twice (It will never pop up for sale, sadly).

Yes, some games are certainly not worth their price, but to me some are well worth it, even if that price is high.

I'll see your original question, and raise you one more:

Why are versions of games for the same gen different prices? Even right after they launch? Example: When Metal Gear Solid HD Collection first came out on the 360 and PS3, it had a Limited edition version with art book and stuff. Both copies were like $69 new.

After only a few months, the 360 version could still be bought for around $80, but the PS3 version was over $100. Someone explained it to me like this: Since the PS3 is the less popular system (over the 360) there were fewer copies sold of the game. Maybe even fewer made. So the PS3 version is more "rare."

The same might be true of your GCN and Wii comparisons. The GCN wasn't really the success that Nintendo had hoped, and I'm guessing that poor software sales helped out with that. So it makes sense that the GCN version is more rare than the Wii version, which I'm sure sold like gangbusters. That's my opinion on it anyway. Who really knows why prices do the things they do? I mean, Earthbound was not a rare game by any means, but I'm sure you are aware of the money it commands. Why? Who knows.
This one is pretty easy to explain. Metal Gear Solid is seen as a Playstation game because the Solid series originated on Playstation and every game in the series has seen a release on Playstation. Xbox support has been hit and miss. For those collectors (like myself) who try to own every game in a series, the Playstation version will be the one to buy/collect. The same goes for Final Fantasy and Resident Evil. The latest Final Fantasy game (Lightening Returns) saw a very fast sell out of the PS3 collector's edition, whereas the 360 version was in stock for weeks and weeks.

Just because the asking price is $200 for a game, don't think I could ever pay that much. What with a fiance, a car to upkeep, pets, bills. And when I do have extra money I just think about other things I want more that are a better experience. $200 or not, an old game is just that, an old game. Doesn't mean it's bad, but at 31 I can't justify it.
