What if instead of saying a game is becoming rare we say it is "endangered due to excessive poaching" ?

It sure would make it more amusing to avoid the douchenozzles on ebay and craigslist.

NES model 001 with gun thingy, paddles, and Mario/Duck Hunt - Mega Valuable!!!!

Well, even this site uses the term "rare and valuable" for the featured game guides. Gaming is weird when it comes to classifications like that - many common games, like Earthbound or Chrono Trigger, are valuable, and many rare games, like Jungle Book on NES, are not. Naturally, the reverse is also true. Will Cross-Edge X become harder to find than Super Mario 64? I would say so. Will it become more valuable? Maybe, maybe not.

Looking at say the SNES article, it does specifically list prices and rarity both on items. Earthbound even specifically says "Another game that is not hard to find, but is very popular." The PCE/TG doesn't have rarity ratings, but those are going to be generally all fairly rare, especially in comparison to US NES/SNES/GEN releases.

Will Cross-Edge X become harder to find than Super Mario 64? I would say so.

Sure there will be a lesser number of copies than SM64 and therefore less copies floating around for sale. So relative to SM64 it is a rarer game for sure. If there are 10000 copies of the game, there will still be about as many of them existing out in people's collections and whatnot in the near future. For it to "become more rare" there would need to be significant change in the number of copies that exist. If 3000 of them shattered in people's consoles due to a manufacturing defect in a bad batch and there were now only 7000 of them left, that would be a significant chunk and it would have "become more rare".

Right, that would be a likely proper use of phrases like that where a larger number are being destroyed or transformed. Even though I don't have much love for sports titles, that urinal made out of SNES sports games a few years ago made me shake my head.

This could potentially be an issue - for both gamers/collectors and casuals who just don't have space or can't move the games. So there's potential there but at the end of the day, I don't ever see a demand to counter this. And no collector's circle or whatever will ever inflate demand either.

Your Madden example is a good one - let's use the last 16-bit Madden, Madden 98. Definitely holds the most value but there's still 22 on eBay active right now and you can get it for virtually nothing. I was surprised at the volume out there online. There are a number of very obscure (imo) SNES sports titles - Sterling Sharpe's End 2 End for example, that despite no one even hearing about this - you can still get it for $5 on eBay without any effort.

You gotta go with Super Famicom for some releases now. Similar to Saturn, the US prices are just getting out of hand. For example, the Super Fami version of Rock N Roll Racing can be had for a few hundred yen ($5 USD) easily.

That is true... take a look at Mega Man 7. The SNES version is hovering around $170 right now but the Super Famicom version is hovering at around $20. Mega Man 7 doesn't have much text to it (and if you need to know the script, they have it online). It isn't a text heavy game like Chrono Trigger. While the price on Chrono Trigger is stupid, since we have the game on the PSN Network, Nintendo DS, Wii, PS1 and mobile and the SNES copy hovers around $70 (I'm happy I still have the game when I got it back in 1995). Of course, Mega Man 7 has only been re-released once back during the 6th Generation of gaming yet it is still all easier to pick up then the SNES version.

Run saber was like $9 a few years ago and now its $35-$45

something to do with a demand for Atlus games I think.

I've always wanted to play soul blazer.

Earthbound was only $110 3 years ago where I'm at. crazy.

Chrono Trigger has managed to keep the same price of $80 for a long time now

I think its because there is a iPhone app version of the game.
so maybe when all the game are available on a non jail broken phone.

I am old enough to remember when Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen was the most expensive SNES game (at least, according to FuncoLand's printed price sheet).
