The first Contra I played was Contra III on SNES (or "Super Probotector" as it's known here in PAL Land). It lulled me into a false sense of security that all Contra games were of a reasonable difficulty level.

Having since played Contra on arcade, Contra Hard Corps on MegaDrive and Contra 4 on Nintendo DS, I've learned that I have a long way to go to be considered a Contra master (just clearing level 1 of Contra 4 on normal difficulty in one credit took me bloody ages).

Shattered Soldier looks to keep up the spirit of sending crap gamers home crying. Good on Konami for not pandering to the mainstream/casual crowd, and keeping this genre damned hard.

There are a number of no-miss (shooter talk for "didn't get hit once") runs on YouTube. Watch them if you want to know how to progress past the trickier bits unscathed.

Shattered Soldier is truly an amazing game!

I would definately say stick with it. It does seem daunting at first but it's surprising how quickly you make progress through it. It's just a matter of memorizing enemy attack patterns as they are the same each time you play.

I would say Konami limited your lives and credits, to make you learn each level bit by bit, to actually help you, rather than constantly continuing your way through to the end.

I managed to get the 'S' score on each level and it's a great feeling once this has been achieved.

Good luck my friend!

Both great games, The Red Star is a bit nicer though. No one hit kills, though not getting hit is important for S ranks. I prefer Red Star as there are some particularly annoying parts in Shattered Soldier, but I had a blast with both games
