Is it possible to port gamecube games to DC?
Hey all. I was just wondering if it was technically possible to port a gamecube game to dreamcast. I was thinking how cool it would be if you could play Sonic Mega Collection or Wave Race Blue Storm and stuff like that. I really don't understand much of the technical stuff, but in the future hopefully I will be able to mod my dreamcast and stuff like that, as I'm interested.

short answer:no
long answer: It would be possible. But it would require a ton of man hours. Not to mention the source code for what ever you wanted to port. Also, you would need a knowledge of programing for both the Dreamcast and the Gamecube. There is more that I provably haven't mentioned.

How is that cool? You must be very very young.Pedochu wrote:Hey all. I was just wondering if it was technically possible to port a gamecube game to dreamcast. I would think you'd be a dork to (wanna) play ports in the first place. Offcourse it's possible. Anything is possible and doable. They can port wave race to the gameboy.

Who needs frames per second when you can have frames per week?d123456 wrote:They can port wave race to the gameboy.

Sorry buddy, I think you just won most ignorant question of the year with that late entry. And here I was thinking I had that one all tied up.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Come on guys -- there are no stupid questions here, so no need to put the guy down.
Anyway, the first answer was best. You need the source code and programming skills. You'd also have to tone down the graphics a bit.

Actually, Wave Race was first on the Gameboy; not ported. Then the N64 and GC got it's own versions.d123456 wrote:They can port wave race to the gameboy.

Texture-wise, on paper the DC wins there. The GC had a combined 3MB of video memory (2MB framebuffer, 1MB texture), whereas the DC had 8MB video memory (assuming the same 2MB frame buffer, that leaves 6MB for textures).racketboy wrote:You'd also have to tone down the graphics a bit.
With that said, the GC had 24MB of general purpose system RAM, compared to the DC's 16MB. Swapping textures and other graphic data back and forth from system to graphics RAM is easily done.
Throughout wise the GC claims 12 million polys per second, compared to the DC's 7 million per second. Insert usual caveat regarding statistics.
Eyeball-wise I think the GC was prettier to look at overall. I guess ultimately that's the benchmark that matters.

more importantly
WHY would you want to do that?
its just much simpler and cheaper to buy a gamecube and play the games
they look better even
