True condolences but putting the personal bit aside - aren't you salary? Not sure about your specific contract, but there is no such thing as "days off" in a salaried position, at least not in my experiences. Of course some companies are easier to work with than others on these things - but i'll assume you don't punch a time-clock.

If i'm in Hawaii and something happens in my purview, i'll be paged and a flight will be arranged for me to get back - on vacation or not.

Every salaried job I've held I've had no problem going incommunicado when I took PTO. When I was at Amazon I'd sometimes get paged in on an issue at night even when I wasn't on the pager duty that day (the guy needed help) but when PTO was taken the pager was left at home, and there was the expectation that people on PTO wouldn't respond. They made a point of making sure that everyone didn't take PTO at once for that reason.

Same here for Turner. If I'm on PTO, I'm gone. I might check work email occasionally, but that's the limit. And while I don't mind saying as a courtesy what I'm doing with my PTO, it's a courtesy, not a requirement. I'm not mission critical in such a way that I have to be in my cube at a very specific time to do my work. Sure, we have people that are like that, but they're constantly monitoring programming feeds.

It depends on the position in the company. In sales, there is no such thing as out of communication for most positions. Many sales jobs do not give quota relief for vacations either.

I don't know your positions - but I believe Luke is a Director and those are typically not redundant positions, meaning it isn't an issue of making sure that such a number isn't on PTO at the same time as it is in some salaried positions - you need to be available.

My company runs a light management structure, we don't have redundancies, some positions can backfill others, but many can't. If there's an emergency in my area, i'm getting called and expected to be in in the most reasonable time possible.

Don't get me wrong - i'm not saying Luke's boss isn't being unreasonable considering circumstances, i'm not saying it even sounds like an emergency, i'm saying it isn't surprising to me that he's getting emails / phone calls while on PTO.

I'd have to check federal law, but I believe management has to approve PTO and has the right to ask what it is for. I know that's the case at my employer, and at my father's employer which has a strong union (BN Railroad) .

: Testing out a spare copy of Resident Evil Outbreak. Wish I had a chance to play this online but I completely missed out. Maybe one day they will do a remake/compilation of the Outbreak games although they seem largely to have been forgotten by Capcom. Love this game but the bots get on my nerves .
