Make my own Atari "RF Switch"?

Post by SoltanGris »

Found a 5" B&W "Bentley" portable CRT TV for $8. Works! Rigged up an old PC powersupply to power it instead of 9 D batteries. The only input is a pair of screws for an antenna.

I want to run my Atari 2600 through it but I don't have the switch box. I do have some old bits of audio equipment and I have an RCA jack that seems to fit the A/V out plug from the Atari. Is it as simple as just connecting A to A and B to B? Do I need some kind of capacitor or filter in there? I'm good with a soldering iron.

My end goal is to mount this TV in my old car, make my own 12v to 9v converter to power the 2600, and have a sweet in-car entertainment system...for like no money...using parts I scrounge out of broken PC and A/V stuff I have laying around.

Just get a RF to RCA adapter

and a 75ohm to 300ohm connecter.

So that's what the thing is. Yeah the connector has transformer in there so cheaper to buy one.

It works! Found out the thrift store paddles I got have dead spots, hopefully some contact cleaner will help with that. ebay has 12v to 9v converters for like 4 bucks so I might just buy those. Next...a properly ghetto installation into my 01 Focus :D Might mount the TV against the headliner.

Nice portable CRT TV, great idea putting it to use with a RF output console! Be careful of the amp draw, even though the TV is 12volt, would be embarrassing if the car won't start after the car show is winding down. I have two batteries in my 62, isolate to one battery for the game then switch to the other to start the car and drive home. I keep the drained battery isolated as not to push the alternator. A trickle charger back at the garage is easier on the battery anyways.

My setup for car shows, a PS2 with LCD mounted in the trunk.

Nice car. Mine is all go no show. I just think it would be funny to have people behind me in traffic see my kid playing space invaders instead of a DVD movie on a flat screen.
