This thread reminds me that I need to pick shorter Summer Challenge games, because apparently everyone else is already blazing through their list, and I've not finished a single game yet.
Spyro was probably ~7 hours and Steam says I spent about 10 hours in Ys II, so they aren't super-short arcade style games (I picked plenty of those, though), I've just had some time to spend with them.

HowLongToBeat lists Daikatana as fairly short, even in a completionist run:

Does that seem far off?

Yeah, 2 and a half hours sounds more like what it takes for someone really familiar with the game and who hasn't encountered any game-breaking bugs or who has the co-op option turned on and isn't having to deal with the AI partners. I'll probably be closer to the completionist time once everything is said and done, but I've encountered game crashes, switches not working properly, AI partners getting trapped and going haywire, AI partners getting killed repeatedly on stupid stuff, etc. And there were a few places where I failed to realize something and got killed as a result, like the Silverclaw being the only way to completely eliminate werewolves.

Also, SOTM = incredible once you get sucked in. I *used* to say that I only was a fan of the linear 'Vanias. Same as you, I would dabble w/ Symphony and get bored. Until I put it on my Summer list 2 years ago and forced myself through it, at which point I was blown away and loved every moment.

Racing games... Outrun? Micro Machines? Wipeout? Star Wars Episode I Racer? Daytona USA? Ridge Racer?
Cool, sounds good!

I've beaten the first boss, the mushroom, and made a bit of progress after that. I'm right outside the swamp at the moment. Reading your last update, I believe actually finding that boss in the mine/ruin is where I always got stuck as a kid.

As for Symphony, I hope my experience will echo yours. I know I'm going to have to force it, but maybe it will click this time.

Those are good suggestions for racers, buuut I've spent a good chunk of time with most of them except Star Wars and Ridge Racer.

Though, just hearing Outrun makes me want to play it. God I love that game.

However...
alienjesus wrote:I'm playign Wave Race 64 as my racing game this year if that's one you've not done.

I'm also playing through Symphony this year. Was planning on it being one of my first ones to start actually (along with Double Dragon as my first console game).

I need to finish Gravity Rush first, then I was planning to play through Rondo of Blood before starting symphony. I've kinda played it before (beat Dracula X Chronicles last year) so it shouldn't be too long?
I think I will join you on Wave Race. I've never played any of them, and its unique, so I think its a good choice.

I'll probably be trying to take down Symphony sooner rather than later as well. Enjoy your run of Rondo though. Its just brilliant. I don't think it'll take you long, especially if you don't try to complete every path. I'll be curious to hear how you think it compares to the Chronicles version.

---

So, having said all of that, I think I've got a good list now. Howzabout:

1. Metroid Prime - GC
2. Resident Evil 2 - PS1
3. Earthbound - SNES
4. Crash Bandicoot - PS1
5. X-men Vs. Street Fighter - Saturn
6. Wonder Boy in Monster World - Genesis
7. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - PS1
8. Wave Race 64 - N64
9. Ico - PS2
10. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - SNES

Eh? Eh? I like it. I think its good.

I can't argue with any game on this list.

I purposefully left off any long games, as I plan on replaying so many RPGs this summer.

I do have one RPG on my Summer list, but as far as I can tell it's pretty brief.

@CFFJR

Somehow I missed seeing EarthBound on your list earlier. Such a good game. One of my favorites.

That's good to hear! I'm definitely looking forward to playing it.

I don't know that I liked Ys II more than Ys I when I played it a while back for TR. It is much of the same, sure, but I think I liked the narrative much better in Ys I (though it isn't the strong suit of either). Still, it was a fun romp for which I only minimally needed a guide and the Steam port seemed like a pretty full-fledged version of it to play.
Didya like the soundtrack? Did you have the option to change it to the PC-88 tunes?

Gonna play Ys III soon? 8)

The soundtrack i used was the default and damn good, though i felt the ys I ost was better.

Is the Steam port of Ys III the one to play? I already have MoC on the Vita and I'm itching to play it...

By Ys III on Steam you mean The Oath in Felghana, right?

Yeah that's a solid game. As I'm sure you know it's a remake of the original Ys III which is a 2D sidescrolling RPG.

Well, I attempted Alien Syndrome and HOLY SHIT is it hard.

Gonna switch to a console port or the PS2 remake.
