Collecting niche game genres.

Post by BahamianGamer »

Hey everybody, as a newbie to game collecting, I was wondering how easy or practical it is to just focus on certain types of releases. Such as for the NES

- Black Box NES games (including Kid Icarus, Metroid and Rad Racer)
- Disney Capcom games
- All 6 Mega Man games

Honestly, I think for my case, it be most sensible to try to collect this way since I don't always get the opportunity to go video game collecting (more like, never) but I know once I have a much more steady income, I can at least afford to shop on eBay.

Plus, I might be able to go to a Retro Game Convention this year (namely, CGE) and I'll be looking to load up on my "niche genres" :)

Considering those are relatively small sets, it won't be too hard to do that online, though it may end up being more expensive than you like if you're on a very limited budget.

But if you're going around to garage sales or gaming stores only and refuse to shop online (as some folks enjoy the hunt quite a bit), it may be a bit harder depending on the area you live in. You might get lucky, you might not. This requires a lot more dedication.

i have a couple sets that i've gravitated toward in my collecting; NES Capcom games, Zelda Series to name a couple. the chances get slimmer and slimmer depending on how niche you want to go unless you're willing to just buy online.

either way, i'm all for niche collecting b/c is keeps interest pretty localized so you don't get your collection so overblown with stuff you're never going to play (unless you're collecting to collect).

I love collecting sub-sets (especially for the NES). It is a great way to add games to your collection, and it is fun tracking down the last game you need to finish one off.

Both the "black box" and "Capcom Disney" sets contain several expensive games and one unreasonably expensive game (Stack Up and DuckTales 2, respctively); so if you are on a limited budget, you might want to try for some of the NES's other sets. I recommend:

* The Capcom "retro" label set (i.e., Commando, Gun.Smoke, Mega Man, etc.)
* The Konami "silver label" games (i.e., Contra, Life Force, Stinger, etc.)
* The Tengen games (i.e., Shinobi, Tetris, etc.)

I would now suggest looking up Dino Crisis and Martian Gothic: Unification as your next purchases.

I don't know how I left Dino Crisis 1 and 2 off, I have those. Dino Crisis with the RE 3 Demo.

Another Survival Horror type game is Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn. Now, it's not monster or zombies or even horror...but it controls Exactly like Resident Evil. Any RE fan will feel right at home. It even has the RE item boxes.
