When will SNES games start going down in price again?

I don't know if anyone's made the analogy yet, but "classic" cars are quite similar. People who had a muscle car in the sixties or always wanted one are drawn to the originals that are severely underpowered with inferior options by today's standards. It exponentially brings up the price on something that had a sticker tag of $2,000 to well beyond new MSRPs in some cases.

There's also a market for Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, Stingray Vettes, and others have all changed aesthetically to throw a nod to their golden years and draw in the kids and admirers of that generation... much like HD remakes, "retro" indie titles, etc.

That's a great comparison Omerta. The collectors' bank account and lifestyle would be exponentially larger for said hobby but the similarities are definitely there.

My wife participates in forums related collecting arts-and-crafts era furnture and pottery. Based on y conversations with her, continuous moaning about the price of collectibles is unique to the video gaming community.

I do find quality SNES carts to be the most difficult to find. Though to be fair, it's one of the strongest libraries of any cart based system IMHO.

These statements essentially contradict each other. It is one of the strongest cart libraries, and as such, there are quite literally hundreds of thousands of most popular games in circulation. There is nothing difficult in the SNES library to find, aside a couple rare boxes like 3 Ninja's kick back.

Pick a "rare" snes game and any one of us can show you 10 ebay listings, amazon listings, or forum listings to go buy it.

Perhaps you mean difficult to find in the wild, but the point is the same. You are much more likely to find a "rare" snes game than a common AES / 6800 / Pico / FM Towns / Laserdisc / etc game.

SNES is neither rare, nor expensive, it's simply more expensive than a few years ago.

I agree with this. I am trying to track down some complete Arcadia 2001 games, which are actually "rare" (unlike 99.9% of "rare" game listings on eBay). The games I am looking for may be listed once a year, and I have never seen listing s for some games.

Bottom line in in the early to mid 2000's no one cared for snes or even nes or genesis games and everyone was all about online and gta. Now ten years later everybody has gone back retro and were all bitching on how much these games are freaking costing more than some of our utility bills that we pay each month and we regret not getting megaman x3 or castlevania Dracula x because back then the games looked old and pixeled. Believe me I know it sucks. I was one of those guys.

get the SFC versions of Dracula X and Megaman X3, both can be had for under $50 considerably less if you have a friend in Japan buy it for you. Those games were super common over there and are completely the same as the US version except for a tiny bit of Japanese text. Just last year I bought Dracula X SFC for $30 and Rockman X3 for $18.

There were people collecting the older games then too (Gamestop carried retro stuff back around 2000. Gamestop ), and some of them were already pricey. Maybe not as much as they've gotten to now, but part of the reason for that is the continual hype that is spun up about the games, and about how you simply must have this or that particular version, original hardware/carts, and so on. Is retro gaming cool? Sure. You can also put every SNES game every made, plus ROM hacks, on a card the size of your fingernail and play them on almost any computing device on the market. For free.

The timing is a matter of age/generation. In the early 2000s, 80s kids were in/graduating from college. Now they've got houses and mortgages and rooms to fill with nostalgic stuff. As more people get to that point in life, subsequent generations of game consoles will rise in price too. Possibly faster, as games and merchandise have proven to be collectible, alongside toys and comics and whatever else.
