How cheap are you?

Well you guys have a tooon of luck, here the cheapest game is 12$ (new, old dosen't matter). I usually buy game lots, so i got them for cheap, but when i start to spend money i will probably spend a lot.

I believe in supporting my favorite publishers who are localizing and publishing new games in genres I am interested in. In that case, I don't have a problem buying a brand new game at full retail price in order to accomplish that. Without that sort of front end support, these games wouldn't even be around to trickle down into the bargain bins for the ultimate frugal types.

That said, I look for deals when I can find them. I generally don't buy used games unless I have to though, because I am crazy about disc condition. I absolutely hate scratched discs with an unbridled passion (for no objectively logical reason honestly) so I am willing to pay a premium to avoid that. I also hate buying a used game that has stickers on the case, or does not include the manual, so again, I am willing to pay a premium to avoid such things.

About the most frugal I get is taking advantage of indie PC game deals or GOG sales. In the case of digital at least, I don't have to worry about compromised physical quality as a side effect of cheap price.

IMO, i think new retail games should be the same as a modern blu-ray/dvd combo pack, about $20-$30.

Yes i know games in the 90's were like $60-$80 for a Cartridge based game, but those prices can be justified with the materials used in each cartridge (plastic + chip boards).

In modern games they just press a disc and slap a $60 price on it, i cant imagine the production costs are anywhere near the Cart based games were.

The last game i bought for $60 was GTA V in October.

I don't care how rare a game is, I'm not in the game collecting business. It's funny that people now have terms for people who buy stuff and put it on a shelf, then make a video telling the world about what they bought. When I was a kid, I had all kinds of cool stuff that I'm sure people would love to have now, but I never gave a thought about it being something I do (the act of going to the store and buying it.)

It's like if you said this game is really rare man, you got to have it. I'd be like I don't care about the game, even it's free, it's just a game I would never play. I'm too damn lazy to go through all the hoops and processes and trips to the post office to sell it, either.

So yeah, you got something I'm interested in, $5.

Defensive! All my games are old. Hooked up to my TV now is a N64 and a PSX. I can spend 5 bucks, kill an hour with a game and still have money for the important stuff. I do have a nice collection of PSX games, black labels, completes with mint discs. Those were acquired at the absolute cheapest prices ever.

I rarely spend $50-60 on a game. If I pre order a game and do $5.00 every few weeks then yeah. I'll buy it. Thats how I bought Ni No kuni, Dragons Crown and Tales of Xillia. But I dont do this too often.

The last time I bought a game outright on its first day was Grand Theft Auto Vice City for PS2.

I do take advantage of Gamestops B2G1 Free deal all the time. But we all do that. We complain, be we still have to support that evil empire.

And When Tax season Comes around, I definitely spend more on games. I've bought $150 of games (mostly gamestop) this past month, because of taxes. Maybe once or twice a month I'll buy a $20 game used or new from gamestop. But tax time is splurge time for me.

Fleamarkets are a different story. Thankfully my local fleamarkets are cheap. A few sellers have ebay prices but most dont care and sell stuff for less than $10 bucks. With most stuff being under $5.00. Stuff has been scarce lately. But I still get lucky.

I dont spend more than $10 anyways. People do sell old ps3 and 360 games for $20+ here. but I ignore them. They're still to new in their eyes and I can get them much cheaper at gamestop.

A few sellers here are catching on to old SNES and N64 ebay prices. I hate them. They're wanting $15-25 for them. Fuck that! I'm not desperate. Thankfully I amassed most of my collection before the prices skyrocketed.

The last game I willingly got higher than my supposed limit (at a fleamarket) was Dual Hearts for PS2. I paid $13 for it about 3 years ago. I got it up in Northern Cali. Only because I couldn't find it at all down here in Socal.

I think I'm rambling now, so I'll stop.

Let me leave you guys one more thing..... I am so cheap.....

A Blu-ray disc is much cheaper to manufacture, sure. The gigabytes worth of content likely took tens, occasionally hundreds of millions of dollars to produce. Quite a lot more than what most any cart based game cost to create.

TV and movies typically have additional distribution to recoup costs, and likely larger audiences to boot, allowing the media costs to be lower.

Man, I wish I could only ever spend $5-$10 on games. I don't know how you guys manage to do that.

I always look for the best deal I can, but I've never been able to find classic titles or collectibles for less than, like $30 - $40. Modern bargain bin games, sure, I can find those in the $5 - $10 range, but even that's not exactly common. Part of that may be due to my refusal to buy used copies unless they're the only affordable option, and every game I buy must be CIB.

As for the thread subject - I'm awful about my spending. Luckily, I'm in a good place and can afford it. I don't have any kids, I don't have a wife to share expenses with, and I'm splitting apartment costs with my room mate so I have enough cushion money to fool around with. Also, the flea markets and thrift stores where I'm at rarely carry video games. I think Central New York's retro scene is sort of dead.

Let me leave you guys one more thing..... I am so cheap.....

I don't think the production costs of disk manufacturing have much to do with the overall price. Games these days cost millions to develop, and usually up to two years. With blu-rays, they recoup a lot of their initial investment in the cinemas and through television station contracts. With games, the first money they make back is through selling the game straight away.

As for my cheapness, I can't remember the last time I bought anything over $10. Usually it's under five (I waste a lot of time in op-shops). When I was young and dumb, I spent $80 on a complete Shenmue Dreamcast set off eBay. Great game and all, but I recently paid $20 for a lot of Dreamcast games that included Shenmue. Patience is important in this hobby.
Come to think of it as well, I'm pretty sure the most I've paid for a console (second-hand) was $35. I've had a lot given to me as well, which beats paying a cent.
