Good choice. Those games are fun, but they can be really tough at times. (If you beat Ys, you will stroll through Crystalis.) Be sure to level upearly and often. There are some bosses in the game you cannot even damage unless you are at a certain level. (Once you reach that level, however, they are really easy.)

Great list, Noise! I played through Dragon's Lair recently and enjoyed it quite a bit. If you take it for what it is (a punishing series of QTEs) and remember when it was released (1983), you will appreciate and enjoy it more. I will suggest that, if possible, you should turn on "cues" so that you can see what you are supposed to press. While the death animations are half of the fun in Dragon's Lair, certain portions of the game are unnecessarily difficult without cues.

Also, Batman: Arkham Asylum is fantastic. It is, IMO, the best "Metroid" game of its generation, and I absolutely loved it. If you are even a casual Batman fan - and if you are a fan of well-designed video games - you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Most versions of Ys I force you to hit the level cap about halfway through the game.

It makes fighting enemies in the second half completely pointless.

Ys II is much more balanced in that respect.

And Ys III has a trick at the very beginning where you can hold down a few buttons and leave the game on for several hours to hit max level. It's kind of like its own version of the Lete River trick from FF6.

Never knew about that.

There is an open area somewhere in the first 1/3 of Ys III where these birds (I think?) keep swooping at you. I always grind to my max level there, it doesn't take long at all.

Yeah, in that first dungeon there is a space where insects continue flying overhead at just the right height where you can kill them by attacking straight up. I think you have to grind out a level or two so you can one-shot them(it's been a while since I played it), but once you can, you just hold down the buttons with a rubber band or something and let it run.

BONE SPECIFIC PRO-TIP: You can do this in the swamps in Zelda II as well. You have to check in occassionally to "confirm" the level increase, however, and reaching the level cap in that game doesn't make it much easier.

Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair is actually pretty good. The 1st half of each stage is a platformer, then the 2nd half of each stage is a horizontal scrolling shmup.

Remind you of another game on the NES that did that?

Oh look, BYYYYYYYY HUDSON *bing*, who also took the first Wonder Boy and made it Adventure Island!

Got a few hours into Ys II and digging it. Past the mines. About to dig into a few more...
