I'm surprised you think MegaMan 8 is acceptable but said Kirby 64 wasn't as it wasn't a great of defining game in the series.

MegaMan 8 is constantly referred to as one of the weakest classic megaman games. It's in the same boat as Kirby 64 for me.
I'll admit that I don't know much about the attitudes towards MM games other than that most of the post 16-bit era ones are less than loved and the ones before are collectively well regarded. I figured MM8 was fine, but if you think it needs to go on the wall of shame I'd be interested in the argument...
Left 4 Dead was released a year after Assassins Creed too, so if you have a problem with the latter being too new, then the former is too.
I think of L4D as a PC game and so I don't think of it from a "generations" standpoint but yes, you have a point. I guess it should be classified as a "modern classic" (games that were first released on the PS3/360/Wii). Towards that end Puzzle Quest would also be out.

Really, I think that games originally appearing on systems that are themselves still regularly getting new releases are too new to count for this challenge…so thanks for reminding me that these two fall into that category!

I'd go with TO if I were you - you don't have any SRPGs on your list, right?

There are better beat 'em ups and better comic book games in that generation(heck, there are better comic book beat 'em ups in that generation[heck, there are better DC Comics beat 'em ups in that generation]).
I know it is not one of the best, or even considered good. But the "World Without A Superman" is my favorite comic story ever. Therefore this game, or the story it's based on, has a soft spot in my heart. I have no problem that it is not considered classic... Its classic to me based on the age, story, and how hard it was (have both the Gen and SNES version) to get at a price I was willing to pay.
I may replace it with the SNES version of Adventures of Batman and Robin (June is Bat-Month on my blog), but I will not change my list unless I start to play AoBaR first.

Darkwing Duck. This is another game I just acquired this winter and everything I heard about it was that it was a hybrid of Megaman meets Disney.
Capcom's NES rendition of Darkwing Duck is pretty straightforward - it's basically Mega Man with some new graphics and some gameplay tweaks.
From hardcoregaming101.com which states it's not a great game. I consider it classic because... yeah it's Capcom and Disney. I beat the main two Cap/Dis entries Chip and Dale and Ducktales, so this seems natural. It is staying on my list.

Frogger 2 - not because of Noise, but because of mjmjr25. I just wanted something to play on my iCast. I will replace that with TMNT: The Manhattan Project (if it shows up from ebay).

Also, Ack what other 16 bit DC brawlers are there? I was tempted to put the SEGA CD version of Prime up there since the art is based on my favorite Bat-Artist EVER Norm Breyfogle.

New list still tentative until June 1st, so keep the discussion of the games going:
1. The Lost Vikings - Gen
2. Double Dragon II - NES
3. Darkwing Duck - NES
4. The DIG - PC
5. Super Mario Land 2 - GB
6. LoZ: Wind Waker (HD Remake) - WiiU
7. TMNT: The Manhattan Project - NES
8. Streets of Rage 2 - Gen
9. The Death and Return of Superman - Gen
10. Alundra - PS1

Batman Returns, The Adventures of Batman and Robin, Batman: Revenge of the Joker, Batman: The Video Game, Batman Forever, Superman, The Death and Return of Superman, and Justice League Task Force are all of the DC games that appeared on either Genesis or SNES.

JLTC is a fighting game, but the rest are either action games with beat 'em up elements or straight up beat 'em ups. Of all of them, I think Batman Returns and The Adventures of Batman and Robin are the best, though I have a soft spot for Batman: Return of the Joker on the Game Boy(Revenge being the name of the Genesis version).

That said, Death and Return does cover an essential Superman story arc. Not my favorite...but then my favorite is the "what if" Red Son.
noiseredux wrote:Aliens Versus Predator
Assassins Creed
Batman Arkham Asylum
Fallout
Final Fantasy III or...
Final Fantasy VIII
Left 4 Dead
Mega Man 8
Puzzle Quest
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Wonder Boy In Monster World
Aliens Versus Predator is one of the best video games of either franchise and totally worth playing.

Fallout is also awesome and totally worth playing.

As is Wonder Boy in Monster World. And I'm all for him playing through Tomb Raider Anniversary. I don't see an issue playing a modern update of a classic like this.

FFIII is balls hard. VIII is definitely longer, but I consider it one of the easiest in the series, with the exception of Omega Weapon, who does pose a challenge.

Mega Man 8 I cannot stand, and I think it's inclusion in any top 1000 list of video games is a joke. Left 4 Dead is ok, though if you want to do that, I'd suggest playing L4D2 instead, since it contains the entirety of L4D in it.

Personally, I do think Batman: Arkham Asylum is going to be a classic of its console era. Same with Assassins Creed. Now whether those eras are old enough is debatable.

Puzzle Quest is 'meh' to me, but I never cared for it.

You know what? Screw the whole list, throw Loom back in there!

Aliens Versus Predator
Batman Arkham Asylum
Fallout
Halo
Left 4 Dead
Loom
Phantasy Star IV
Puzzle Quest
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Wonder Boy In Monster World

I'm okay w/ removing MM8 then. And I think AvP meets the "classic" status more than L4D. So I'm probably gonna scratch Halo to keep genre variety. Batman I'm still pretty OK with though. Unless anyone can really compel me otherwise. Puzzle Quest I'm on the fence, so I'll scratch it for now. Phantasy Star IV will take the place of either FF. Phantasy Star III wasn't part of the same storyline as I, II and IV, so I'm ok skipping around. So I still need a few more.

I may also start this list soon. I usually start Memorial Day weekend, but my sis is getting married that weekend and I'll be out of town most of it. So we'll see how much time I have before then to get the ball rolling.

It is just way too new. It has come out since you've joined this site, after the PS3 slim, since Obama was elected, etc. It isn't even a borderliner like something from 2005 - it is a recent game and NOT any more a "classic" than something like The Last of Us or Skyrim.

I have all of those, but would consider more of them platformers... I have not yet beat Batman or Batman:RotJ on the Genny, just the NES versions. I think Batman Returns is the best Marvel/DC comic beat-em up game out there and Batman NES is possibly my favorite game ever.

and yet, you've still offered no alternative. So I'm still good w/ it.
