XBOX Power Cord Question

Post by Luke »

What should it look like?

My last oxbox exploded (exaggeration, but the thing did in fact blow up) and I have a "cord drawer" and I know that Microsoft provided me with an "efficient cord". I'm fine with purchasing an extra, so what should I look for?

Thanks.

My first Xbox blew up on me as well. Was a nice crackling noise and cloud of smoke after I turned it on one day :P. Went online and found out about the recall :P bit late for a new cord after that though  .

Here is some info I found on some old posts.
The power cords affected were manufactured in the United States before October 23, 2003 or Europe before January 13, 2004.
New cords (if you get the ones without the afci box, and supplied with new xboxes) are numbered JHT-031 . old, (probably defective) ones are numbered JHT-013 .

JHT-013 ones are the ones that need to be replaced.

I have one that looks like this, but I think it was a replacement for a standard power cord. I don't know if the GFCI part is really necessary.

Edit: Maybe it is necessary. I got into the Xbox scene pretty late, and one of the systems I got had a standard cord.
My games for sale: Racketboy, Amazon, eBay
My systems: NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube (Game Boy Player), Wii / Game & Watch: Ball, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP (x2), Nintendo DSi / Genesis (Sega CD, 32X), Saturn / Game Gear / PlayStation, PlayStation 2 / Xbox / Mac (Windows PC) / iPhone, iPad

Jeez, I never even knew this was a thing. After reading that I went and checked my cable and it was in fact, a JHT-013  Time to get that replaced me thinks...

Believe it or not, Microsoft sent me a new xbox, and paid for all delivery. Zero out of my pocket. I don't want to blow up this console, so images of cords would help.

In short, sparks flew out of my oxbox years ago leaving my game room smelling like a pile of burnt action figures. The system actually had that line of smoke that you've seen in cartoons (think Wile E. Coyote).

I'm a dolt for not labeling my cords, but I do need to know what power cord is the best to prevent another explosion. -----Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where "moo moo Homer" prevents "explo-shion" No time for Tab!

I also use just a regular AC cord, similar to the PS1/PS2/Dreamcast cord. No safety pop off at the plug end, maybe that GFI is the weak point for the amperage requirements? I don't plan on taking a bath with my Xbox.

Funny you mention this Luke...

A few years ago I bought my first oXbox online. The power cord looked so damn generic I was convinced it was a made by a third-party. I hopped online and bought an official Microsoft oXbox cable.... which turned out to be exactly the same as the one I already had.

I have two OXBOXes and I've used normal plugs no problem with it.

I did find one of those big plugs once. I bought it for a dollar. And when I finally used it on the OXBOX, it didn't turn on. The safety/test plug popped.

I think the plug was defective.

I dont know if the plugs I currently have on them are original or not. Usually I take it off my ps2 and plug it in.

Good thing i bought my Xbox after SW: Kotor came out, which was after November 18th, and my Xbox is the one with the Samsung DVD Drive.

While i dont play my oXbox very much, ive never had any problems.
