I'm backing Ds on Death and Return of Superman. It has some interesting stuff in it, but overall it's considered mediocre at best. There are better beat 'em ups and better comic book games in that generation(heck, there are better comic book beat 'em ups in that generation[heck, there are better DC Comics beat 'em ups in that generation]).

Aliens Versus Predator
Batman Arkham Asylum
Fallout
Final Fantasy III or...
Final Fantasy VIII
Halo
Left 4 Dead
Loom
Mega Man 8
Puzzle Quest
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Wonder Boy In Monster World

...you guys aren't shitting on my list enough though. It needs work.

There's 3 FPS games on there. Gotta narrow that down. Honestly, I'm more interested in AvP and L4D. Halo is def the "classic" though. So there's that. Though I have played an hour or two of it and wasn't loving the buggy. That also means that I've played some of it prior.

Loom... I also played when I was younger. That might be reason to chop it.

Batman is one that I feel like people are always like "I can't believe you haven't played those games!" thus its inclusion. Though, will it be too similar to TR Anniversary, genre-wise?

FF III or VIII? My instinct is III. And I assume III is shorter?

Help me brainstorm though - maybe there's something from those Sega Genesis collections that I've missed out on? What genres am I neglecting? How about racing games? Is Need For Speed Hot Pursuit considered classic?

I don't think so…I think you are just equating "Japanese+old" with "classic". The games are as a whole pretty well panned and they aren't especially ground-breaking in any significant way, nor do they have much of a legacy/influence on other series. I get that there's a niche audience for them and that they aren't horrid by any stretch…but not a "classic" by the meaning of that word I've been trying to hold lists to.

I thought Mega Man 8 was always seen as being one of the worst main line entries? Or is that MM7?

noise, didn't you stop playing Final Fantasy II because it was too hard?

And now you want to play Final Fantasy III?

Mwahahahahahahaha.

As for Valis, it was certainly a success enough to warrant several sequels and a bunch of ports. It was more popular in Japan, I'll give you that. I'd argue that it helped kickstart the "girls with swords" style of video game. I feel as if most retro gamers at least know about the series even if they haven't played the games, so it seems to fit the spirit of this thread.

Noise, I think your list is good with the exception of Batman and AC, unless you are cool with the "modern classics" thing. :x
I'm surprised you think MegaMan 8 is acceptable but said Kirby 64 wasn't as it wasn't a great of defining game in the series.

MegaMan 8 is constantly referred to as one of the weakest classic megaman games. It's in the same boat as Kirby 64 for me.

Left 4 Dead was released a year after Assassins Creed too, so if you have a problem with the latter being too new, then the former is too.

As for Noise's list.
Aliens Versus Predator Which one are we talking about here?
Assassins Creed Depends on if you think modern games should count. I think almost 7 (holy crap) years later this one isn't too ridiculous.
Batman Arkham Asylum Perhaps a bit too new? 2009 release.
Fallout Yep, definitely a classic.
Final Fantasy III or...
Final Fantasy VIII VIII would be easier, but longer. Up to you on this one, both would count in my eyes.
Halo Definitely a good option
Left 4 Dead 2008 release. What's your cut-off?
Loom Great choice.
Mega Man 8 Not the best thought of in the series, but I'd be fine with it. My Kirby64 points still stands though XD
Puzzle Quest I heard a few people like this one when it came out, but I dunno about it being a classic. Another newish one too -2007
Tomb Raider Anniversary - It's quite different from the original, but it'd probably be similar enough to count? I dunno
Wonder Boy In Monster World - Definitely a good pick

Leaning towards Tactics Ogre or FFVIII as my 10th in place of Cybernator. Will probably got with FFVIII if Noise does play it.

Aliens Versus Predator Which one are we talking about here?
Aliens VERSUS Predator (not Vs.) - the 1999 PC game.
Left 4 Dead 2008 release. What's your cut-off?
I don't have a cut-off really.
Mega Man 8 Not the best thought of in the series, but I'd be fine with it. My Kirby64 points still stands though XD
A lot of brainstorming came from thumbing through that 1000 Games To Play Before You Die book, which included MM8. So I figured that meant it was a pretty well received entry - and one I hadn't played.
Tomb Raider Anniversary - It's quite different from the original, but it'd probably be similar enough to count? I dunno
Right. I've played the original back in the day. So I thought would be cool to see Crystal Dynamics' reinterpretation after I adored their 2013 prequel.

EDIT: I just thought of something. Maybe Phantasy Star III or IV instead of either Final Fantasy?

Sucks.
Yeah maybe.
I've played quite a few hours of II. That's why I was thinking III or IV instead.

PSIII is the "black sheep". But I enjoy it. I like it more than II in fact.

IV is the best in the series, hands down.

I'd rank them:
IV
I
III
II
