Yeah, but most "nerds" I know won't go in a hundred foot wide circle of metal.
On the other hand, every metalhead I've ever known has been a complete and utter nerd. Some try harder to hide it than others.

So I just realized I have been not drinking for exactly a year today. I've noticed that I have a ton of extra money at all times. I'm also a huge asshole to drunk girls but that's ok since I have stock in Duracell.

I do not want to sound like a jerk, but does bad economy really hurt the spending of individuals?

There was an economy downfall in 2008, did you walk the streets and saw more homeless, people that go out less, less people in Starbucks?

I have never experienced that, some how our economy does not collapses .The reason I ask this is that during economy downturns business was booming for Xbox, PS3, iPhones, Apple, I guess Netflix, which does not show signs of poverty.

Sure maybe less people are buying BMWs, but the living standard must be the same for most?

Well it's more of the fact that you saw people going with netflix and hulu over say a normal cable/dish subscription since it's a lot cheaper...

It does. First and foremost, with a bad economy, people are just inclined to spend less money. They may not make some frivolous purchase they otherwise would have. They might pay more attention to the grocery budget where normally they didn't at all.

I'm not an expert, but I can tell you from my own personal experience. I worked in supermarket for 9 and a half years, from 2004 (before the recession). I can tell you what spending was like before the recession and after. It's like night and day. I also worked in a privately owned music store. The owner told me sales fell off when the recession hit. He said they've come back some, but it's still not where it use to be. And that's my findings with the supermarket. Business is a little better, but still not where it use to be. People aren't spending money like they use to.

During the Great Depression in the 1930's, movies were still being made and movie theaters were still in business. People need some way to escape.

The standard of living, for most, hasn't changed drastically. For some it has though, I would imagine. For most, I wouldn't say drastic. Maybe spending money less frivolously. Paying more attention when food shopping to sales and store brand instead of name brand items. Not making large purchases, like new TVs, cars, etc.

Forget BMWs, just any cars in general. Instead of getting a new car, you might have considered just keeping your old one as long as possible. General Motors had to file for bankruptcy in 2009 and was bailed out by the government. There's no more Saturn and Pontiac.

Plus I don't know of very many people who buy the current model year for cars anyways. Most people I know, if they do get a new car it's one that's at least a model year or two old(or even older).

It is more fiscally responsible to buy a used car, even it is only one or two years old. You could save in the tens of thousands of dollars. I'll give the example of a full size truck because that is what I drive and have more experience with. A brand new 4x4 full size Silverado will cost about $42,000 MSRP. A 2013 with 30,000 miles with the same or better options will be under $30,000. And that is a vehicle that holds its value pretty well in my area.

Cars are a necessity but very super rarely an investment. If cars are "your thing", awesome. always good to know what you like and spend time on what you like.

But all I need is something reliable that can get me from a to b, and back to a.
