How would basic yard work and lugging water heaters help me when I'm working in a restaurant, office, store (preferably a punk rock clothing store, record store or comic book store) or some combination of the three while living in a small (better part of at most 100 square feet) room in an apartment being shared with a group of strangers I met just before I signed the lease, dealing with an unfamiliar area, dealing with a higher cost of living and having to work 60 hours a week just to break even at best and navigating a public transportation system more complex that a half-assed attempt at a bus system that arbitrarily breaks its schedule and retools its routes on literally a whim?

He's in a NO SPIN ZONE.

It's like saying "any intelligence and experience I learned in a big city would be irrelevant in a small city".

REPO, you're totally missing the point of prfsnl_gmr's message. There's some intangible qualities you're missing out that your uncle is trying to instill. The biggest comes to mind is work ethic. If you're seeing these menial tasks as annoyances, how will you ever expect to handle tasks that you disagree with ideologically but are required, unless you plan on being your own boss in NYC.

I'm still wondering why it took what feels like 5 pages for someone to say that... >_>

Consider me an optimist. Maybe he'll turn over a new leaf, like we all try to get him to do. If it was my family and I scoffed at doing some tasky stuff for someone who put a roof over my head, I'd be looking for a new place to live.
