Apparently it was held up in customs because "they had never seen a system like the RetroN 5" before. Huh. I'm sure they have seen their fair share of clone systems.
The recently posted podcast on the NeoGAF Retron 5 thread is worth a listen. Some other questions were answered (all but a true release date). BUT, he did confirm that Amazon, Newegg, and Think Geek preorders from before the price increase will be honored at the original $99.99 price.

Listen up, gamers! We just told our supplier in China to throw a batch of our BRAND NEW SMOKIN' HOT game console, the RETRON 5, on a boat and send it straight to the good ol' U-S-A. But it looks like our BAD ASS TURBO-CHARGED system was way too EXTREEEEEEME for THE MAN!! (guitar solo)

I decided to cancel my pre-order for a few reasons. I bought a Super Retro Trio with the GBA adapter and that's working quite well for me. I'm pretty annoyed with the way Hyperkin has handled the situation and, the final straw was seeing the first unboxing video on Machinima be a DOA system. I haven't ruled out picking one up at some point but I would rather wait for the second or third run to be sure the system is worth the money.

I don't really know much about the Super Retro Trio. Can you break it down for me? What's it cost? What's it play out of the box? What can it play w/ further adapters and how much are they? Are these things still readily available? (I feel like I had looked into a system like this w/ various adapters in the past, but most adapters were sold out).

Surprised to see so many folks cancelling pre-orders. This thing will drop soon(-ish) and those who change their minds and decide to get it after all will be paying $40 extra.

I'm wishing I had pre-ordered it now myself.

Personally I've found all of the anger about the delays to be kind of ridiculous. A lot of the issues were out of Hyperkin's control and if they had released a flawed version on time people would just be complaining they should have delayed it.

^ Honestly couldn't be more true.....have we learned nothing from the failures of some mmo's and other games that were released way too early?

Had it met its December deadline:

YES! DELAYS OVER! TIME FOR RETRON 5!

later...

WTF? FAMICOM PINS BENT? WHY DIDN'T HYPERKIN DELAY IT TO FIX THESE ISSUES???

I make it a daily ritual now to visit all the grief-ers on Hyperkin's Facebook. Today's gripe: A contest winner getting a Retron 5 early, followed by "WHY AREN'T THE PAYING CUSTOMERS GETTING THEIRS YET?"
