Best Possible Wiring Config For Many Consoles to One TV?

Post by Snatch1414 »

Just curious. I'm aware of the switch boxes and have one but need another. Let's say you have 6 consoles with AV cables. How would you best arrange everything?

Well the best way to do it and semi keep it organized is to have a decent tv stand and rubber band the excess cord up. Of course that isn't saying much for mine, but I've been trying to do the same with it. Even if I might have barely enough inputs not the tv for all my systems...

Switch boxes, and 3 in 1 AV cables. With the proper set, you can reduce your cables to a handful for a dozen consoles, at least.

Do any of those consoles support SVideo or Component for a better image? Utilize all the inputs of your TV. For instance, all consoles that have Component go to a component switch box and then to the component input of the TV.

Let me describe my setup to give you an idea of how I've got everything hooked together:

A/V Switch 1 (all S-Video):
SNES
N64
PS1
PS2

A/V Switch 2 (mix of composite and S-Video):
Genesis
Saturn
TurboGrafx + CD
3DO

A/V Switch 1 goes into X-RGB S-video input 1, A/V Switch 2 goes into X-RGB s-video input 2 and composite input 2. I use a splitter on the audio lines from A/V switch 2 so it can go into both audio ins on the X-RGB.

Dreamcast PC out goes into X-RGB PC in.

X-RGB PC out goes into TV

Meanwhile

Component switch (6 terminal)
Gamecube
Wii
Neo Geo (modded for component output)
Xbox
Xbox 360 JP (only had component out, not HDMI)

That switch feeds in to TV component in

TV HDMI (4 ports)
PC
Xbox 360
PS3
A mini HDMI auto-selecting switch

That mini HDMI switch will switch to the active HDMI input (and will go with input 1 over input 2 if both are pushing data). It has:
Wii U
Xbox One
PS4

Everything is controlled with a Harmony remote that will set the switches to the right number and the TV to the right input.

The NES and SMS are on a separate CRT (for light gun games) and that TV simply has two inputs.

Aren't there issues with some games over component into an HDTV?

I don't know but I thought all the people on this site recommended that you use component over composite/s-video. Since I'm not a true video/audiophile it doesn't bug me that bad of course I don't have a side by side comparison to know the difference. That's why i hated those commercials that compared sd to hd on a sd screen >_< that just makes no sense...

Hmm, maybe I'm just lucky since mine is ED not HD.
