Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
My list that I may not actually get to...
1. Eye of the Beholder (SNES or SCD)
2. Dark Souls (PS3)
3. Castlevania (NES)
4. Dragon Age: Origins (PC)
5. Ogre Battle 64 (N64)
6. Desert Strike (Genesis)
7. Splatterhouse (TG16)
8. Valis (Genesis)
9. Ys II (PSP)
10. System Shock 2 (PC)
Eye of the Beholder is planned for Together RPG. Castlevania, DA:O, OB64, Desert Strike, and Ys II are all games I have played and liked, but never finished. I have really been wanting to play Dark Souls, I have had it since release. Splatterhouse, Valis, and System Shock 2 are all games I have wanted to play and seems to round out the list well.

QUICK MAN'S STAGE FUCKING SUCKS!
Jesus, Heatman's stage isn't much better either - those disappearing blocks are a hell of a lot harder than I remember. In fact, it seems like the stages are where the difficulty comes into play, as opposed to the X series where the bosses present the greatest challenge. I've beaten Crash Man and Bubble Man handily on my first tries, but these stage hazards are killing me.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
The second to last boss is the Demon King with the heads that fall off and chase you. It's super annoying because they can very easily lock you in the corner and absolutely drain your health. Add to that the twisty dungeon before it as well...I kind of hate him.alienjesus wrote: Which boss was the second last one? It's been a while since I've played.
Have you played all the others in the series? Did you notice how Monster World is absolutely PACKED with references to them? Stuff like the opening area being right out of Monster Land (as well as the infamous moving staircase blocks in the final dungeon), one of the bosses losing his head like in the original Wonder Boy and the snowman boss playing on a sidescrolling stage like Monster Lair?
I also prefered Dragon's Trap and Monster World IV to WB in MW, and although I think Monster World is objectively better than Monster Land, I have more of a soft spot for that one. All the games in the Monster World series are awesome though.
I did notice some throwbacks. You get the original Wonder Boy's axe at one point to turn into the ultimate weapon and the Demon King's third head looks like one of the bosses from Dragon's Trap. I guess changing into the pygmy is like MouseMan in DT. Wonder Boy is like Zelda in that regard; similar items being passed down through the series to form a loose sense of continuity.
I would place Monster World as third best in the series. I'm not a huge fan of Monster Land, mainly down to that stupid timer and when I first saw Monster Lair I thought it was a romhack. The original is so far removed from what came later it's hard to place it anywhere.
I'm going to move onto Nights next. I have the saturn version but no 3D pad and the 360 "HD" version. Not sure which one to start with.

I think the saturn one plays OK with the regular pad, although it's certainly better with analogue controls.Sload Soap wrote:The second to last boss is the Demon King with the heads that fall off and chase you. Probably - it would be an example of a classic of its genre. It just happens to be a niche genre.Ack wrote: The Typing of the Dead? Isn't that a cult classic?
