Re: Do you think the PS2 is retro?

Post by nightrnr »

Posting some random thoughts on the matter...

I originally bought a PS2 mostly for classic fighting games and arcade compilations. For that purpose, does it count as a retro? I guess you could get a current gen console for the same reason but it wouldn't be retro.

Also, I see the early PS2 games (especially the early CD format games) as in a different bracket than the majority of PS2 games.
And then there's the matter of supported TV formats/resolution. Non-HD/widescreen is just going to be looked at as old.

But, I'm not calling anything retro anymore. It's a subjective term that means nothing something different to everyone.
...just another lost soul...

Hmm, I would call it retro now that the PS4 is out.. but at the same time I do agree with the 15-20 year mark. I make an exception for the PS2 since its 13 and PS4 is out now.

yeah, it's entirely subjective & i know the 2 gens prior is the standard rule for many, but this gen so far has really made me look back more fondly on the 32-bit gen so while i'm okay with others labeling it such, i think i'm sticking to a 3-gen prior rule for now, after last gen's length being such an anomaly anyway.

Maybe the "retro" word should be attached to something that has been done differently or in low tech. compared to the current standards.

For example. N64 was in 3D and utilised analogue controllers which made the NES(which was still the main Nintendo consoles 6 years ago) look "retro" . Other than sharper graphics and online gameplay, you do not feel ps2 is old enough to be retro. I think if you play something like Okami you wouldn't even notice it.

It works with other things too, think how VHS seems retro but not a DVD compared to Bluray, because VHS used tape and had a different design and player. DVDs and Blurays are very different but they look the same, their players look the same, and you probably have to squint to see the difference in some movies depending on transfer quality, up-scalers, and type of movie. I am sure it would should a lot more on something like transformers than 7 Samurai

It's been almost a year since this thread was started - the PS2 is definitely retro now!

To be honest, I kinda agree with the 2 gens ago rule. 15 years is hard to go by with how the systems are released it seems. Plus the ps2 seems iconic now with some of the rpgs, and other games that received their start on the ps2 that were and still are great series.

It was released a full year before Sept.11 , this should make it feel retro enough!

Heh true but I'd still rather go by the 2 systems rule, if it's 2 systems ago it's legacy and a prime candidate for retro...though ps1 felt retro as is when the ps3 came out so we might as well call ps2 retro I guess. I wonder if the same could hold true for the gamecube though?

Seriously, we discussed this many times over and "retro" is a subjective term. If you play God of War 2 you do not feel its "retro". Same with movies. In the 90's it was easy to spot movies made in the 80's. If I show you a movie from 2001, like Lord of the Rings, you do not feel its retro. Pretty much you will feel its very recent. The reason is advancement.

In '99 , VHS felt very recent in fact I believe people still collected movies in that format even though it was released something like 25 years ago. Today VHS feels an archaic format and I am kind of sure there are some kids who do not know whats this "tape thing" even though it has been dead for only 10 years. I am pretty sure I still saw VHS units sold 7 years ago.

I do not think there is a system or rules for retro games, I think its advancement. SNES was almost an instant "retro" console because next-gen game weres all 3D with analogue and involved disc based games which made the SNES look old tech. Compare RE1 to Donkey Kong Country then compare Tomb Raider (PS4) to God of War 2 (PS2) and you will see what I mean.
