So originally I wasn't planning on having this posted so soon, but with andomhajile over at NA posting a thread about his Mega Man 2 soundtrack in the works, I thought it made sense for me to post where I was at with my project (we were about two weeks from an unveil). So here we go, Racketboy! Please help me with track selection.
Project: Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross Limited Edition Vinyl Soundtrack
Print Run: Up to 500, Printed Once
Vinyl Color: Black, tentatively
Cost: TBD. Could be up to $30 shipped.
Weight: 150g or 180g (Not Standard 120g)
Art Designs: Coming Soon
Certificate of Authenticity: Yes
The basic premise is that each side will have a few tracks from each game. Chrono Cross is my favourite soundtrack of all time, with Chrono Trigger close behind, and as a massive audiophile, there is nothing I want more in the world than to hear my favourite game on a record player. We will attempt to use two different artists/art styles for each record, to represent very beautiful and unique takes on the game universe.
I am debating using 180g weight. This is considered 'audiophile' quality. Heavier records last longer, are extremely durable, and have less overall issues with any form of wear. I am waiting to hear back on the extra cost for this. At a minimum, I'd like to use 150g, with is still heavier than the 120g used on most records.
Each side will feature roughly 20-22 minutes of audio. The reason for not doing more is that this is the optimal range to have the highest sound quality. Now, I could simply pick out tracks I like, but I want the community's opinion as to what would be the best tracks to have on this compilation. It would be great if people could suggest a few tracks they like from each game, and even rank them. I believe crowdsourcing is important for creating the optimal product.
A note on colored vinyl: While overall I am not opposed to colored vinyl and have many of them in my own record collection, you will almost always have the best sound quality on black. Because I do not feel the Chrono series has a defining color, I rather use black for -this- record. However, some of the other games I have in mind would use color.
I will have artwork up as soon as possible. With having to deal with contracts with multiple artists, I also have to work with their availabilities. One of my artists has already started on their side of the outer jacket.
We will not be taking pre-orders until all the artwork is complete, records are ordered, and the test pressings have been sampled.
Please help with track selection below! Thanks so much. Also, if you have more questions, please ask them below (try to keep it civil).

Very cool idea. Not something I'm going for personally, but I always like to see people do the whole labor of love thing on classics, no matter what the circumstances.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Please put Chrono Jigga on Vinyl. That would be hilarious. 10 years from now someone finds it at thrift store. I never seen Jigga play chrono trigger.

Is Yasunori Mitsuda getting a cut of the profits? Or are you doing a cover of the songs?

It's an arrangement. If he wanted a cut of a profits, that'd be fine - but there are barely any profits to be had. With shipping $10-15 for me as a Canadian, this is, as KalessinDB said, a labour of love project. I just want a unique alternate way for someone to enjoy something that is truly art.
We won't be using any official logos or designs or anything. The whole project will be customized.

I would preorder if I could hear a snippets of the songs beforehand. Because while it would be awesome to have this, if yall butcher Scars of Time or Gato's Theme that is a no buy. Actually a butchering of Gato's Theme could be funny. Ive never seen a fan made album of covers released on vinyl and I would love to get in on it.
A couple more technical questions:
- Who are yall looking to use to press it?
- What is your recording setup? AKA do you have studio time lined up, or are you doing it in a jerryrigged one - not to say one is better than another, I am just curious?
- Do you have an engineer who has done prolevel recording/mastering before?

Hope we didn't scare him away.

No, sorry, I've just been busy. I've been working on some things, such as attempting to acquire partial rights (as I'd prefer the project to have a tinge of legitimacy -if- I can), also I do work two full time jobs, so.
fastbilly1 - Which, the above, should answer that as a question. These were meant to be the original recordings.

Ah, so it is not covers, just the original songs on vinyl. What is your source material? I ask because having put 196k MP3s on vinyl it is not worth it. If it is just CD rips put on to vinyl, I am still interested, but not as much as I was. Also, in your Nintendo Age topic you said you cannot get rights for any Chrono Cross songs other than Scars of Time. If that is the case, why not just have Scars as the last track?
