Summer Games Challenge 2014
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
I actually completed a list of ten last year, but I heavily modified it during the course of the summer after eliminating a bunch of 30+ hour RPG/strategy games. I'm going to try to start out with a more manageable list this time:
1) Final Fantasy V (SFC) - I started this one a few days ago, anyway.
2) Seiken Densetsu II (SFC)
3) Shinobi (SMS)
4) Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (SMS)
5) Landstalker (MD) - I know it's not strictly a classic, but I also started this one not too long ago.
6) Altered Beast (GEN)
7) The Lost Vikings (GEN)
8) Eye of the Beholder (SCD hopefully)
9) Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GC)
10) Super Mario Bros. (NES) - I'm betting this one will change.

To the contrary, the editors of Electonic Gaming Monthly included in several of their "greatest games of all time" lists, and I considered it very carefully when I was assembling my list.pierrot wrote: 5) Landstalker (MD) - I know it's not strictly a classic, but I also started this one not too long ago.

This is also on my list, but under a different name.pierrot wrote: 4) Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (SMS)
And smart thinking double-dibbing with Together Retro/RPG.
When you finish Landstalker make sure you check out the oh-so-delicately named sequel: Lady Stalker.
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
@pierrot - not many all of mine are classic/retro games either they're just games in my backlog that for years I've been meaning to complete and i'm just now getting around to doing so....
now which one on my list to complete first is the major question...I know the pokemon yellow and yugioh will probably be the last to be completed but dang I'm having a hard time deciding, especially with summer break officially starting next week

That's part of the reason I added it, actually. I'm probably going to attempt to shadow you through the game. I'll be curious to know if there are any real differences beyond aesthetics.BoneSnapDeez wrote:This is also on my list, but under a different name.
Yeah, I keep meaning to get that one, at least to complete the loosely connected tetralogy.BoneSnapDeez wrote:When you finish Landstalker make sure you check out the oh-so-delicately named sequel: Lady Stalker.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Ahh, my favorite thread of the year has arrived - I've been waiting for this one
I've decided to give my NES a little more love this summer, so almost half of my list is dedicated to it (though a few of these are fairly short, so I might actually finish my list this year).
1. Mega Man 2 (NES)
2. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
3. Star Tropics (NES)
4. Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (NES)
5. Earthbound (SNES)
6. Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
7. Metroid: Other M (Wii)
8. Silent Hill 3 (PS3 HD Re-release)
9. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
10. Final Fantasy 9 (PS1)
As per last year, I'll update my progress on each game as I continue through them (and rant and rave about them when I inevitably get frustrated) and post my thoughts after completing each one. Looking forward to seeing everyone's progress throughout the summer!

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
This was my tentative list when I first started, though I dropped quite a few of these in 2013. I ended up beating 5 classics, and played about 11 in total.
1. Sonic Pocket Adventure - 2D Platformer - NGCP - Beaten!
2. Dragon Warrior - Turn Based RPG - GBC - Dropped
3. Final Fantasy 1 - Turn Based RPG - IOS- Beaten!
4. Contra - Run and Gun - NES - Incomplete
5. Super Mario RPG - Turn Based RPG - SNES Beaten!
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES Incomplete
7. Resident Evil 4 - Third Person Shooter - Wii
8. Half Life - First Person Shooter - PC
9. ??
10. ??
Never got around to Resident Evil 4 or Half-Life. I ended up replacing them with some other games.
At the end, the games I played were this
1. Sonic Pocket Adventure - 2D Platformer - NGCP - Beaten!
2. Dragon Warrior - Turn Based RPG - GBC - Dropped
3. Final Fantasy 1 - Turn Based RPG - IOS- Beaten!
4. Contra - Run and Gun - NES - Incomplete
5. Super Mario RPG - Turn Based RPG - SNES Beaten!
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES Incomplete
7. Snatcher Beaten!
8. Shining Force II Beaten!
9. Super Mario Bros 3 Incomplete
10. Spyro The Dragon Dropped
11. Lunar: Silverstar Story Beaten!
I also spent a few days playing Pokemon Pinball when I realized that I can't really beat it ~_~......
So I beat 6 games, 7 if I include becoming comfortable with Pokemon Pinball last summer, not too shabby.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Well, I guess I'll post my list. This was the year I said I'd catch up in the 7th gen, so I'm not going to go to crazy about the summer challenge. I might start early just to clear way for modern gaming later. Here is my list
1. Sin & Punishment - I wanted to play this last summer, but I took a lot of time trying to configure the n64 controls to my 360 controller since it was a rom. By the time I was done I didn't feel like playing, but now it is setup and ready for booting.
2. Metroid: Zero Missions - I've barely tasted any Metroid, and this seems like a good entry into the series. Might be the next game I play.
3. Kirby's Adventure - I thought this game was kinda cool as a kid, since then I kinda hate kirby. Figure I give this one a try.
4. Ikaruga - I believe this is on Together Retro, but I really want a game that will take me a while to get good at, and this will probably be my go to game for that. I've hardly played any shooters too, so it'll be hell of an experience. Might play Air Zonk instead though...~_~
5. Metal Gear game - Thinking either Metal Gear Solid or Twin Snakes, maybe an 8 bit one. I'd like to eventually catch up so I can play MGS4 and V.
6. Sonic game (Master System) - I've been working my way through completing all of the Sonic games, the 8 bit and handheld ones in particular. Sonic 1,2 or Chaos are on my hit list for sure.
7. Lunar: Eternal Blue - I beat the first Lunar last summer, so I'd like to complete the series. Might play Mother 3 instead for an RPG fix.
8. Contra - Never got around to finishing it last summer when I was well on my way too.
9. God of War II - Started breaking into this series, I played GoW earlier just so I could get the plot for GOW 2 and 3, the two games I'm more interested in playing.
10. Fallout - I love the mythos of this series, but I never got around to digging deep into them, always quit very early. Will make an effort to beat the original sometime.
A Link to the Past and SMB3 are two games I might boot up my save files to finish too.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Ok, so this summer I don't think I'll be doing a full ten, as last year I finished five and got bored of it. So instead, I think I'll put up 5 with a few optional possibilities. I will have to wait and see whether Ds considers these "classic" enough to pursue. He probably won't.
Anyway, my five games:
1. Daikatana (PC) - The game that killed John Romero's career. It's not so much a classic as it is infamous, but its name value alone is likely high enough you all know about it. Time I really sit down and give it a shot.
2. Kirby 64 (N64) - The Kirby series is one of Nintendo's flagships, yet I don't often hear this one brought up, either when discussing the series overall or the console it appeared on. I'm interested in finding out why.
3. Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels (SNES via Super Mario All-Stars) - It is time I attempt to man up and beat this beast, so I can finally say I've finished off all games on Super Mario All-Stars. This is the one never released in the US and the true second game in the NES trilogy. I think Clubber Lang's prediction best sums up what I'm expecting right now: "Pain."
4. Eye of the Beholder (SNES) - I plan to attempt to tackle a classic of the western dungeon crawler RPG, and I plan to specifically use the SNES port to do it. I've had Eye of the Beholder in my collection for years but have never given it a fair shake. But it is considered one of the best of the Westwood D&D titles.
5. Final Fantasy V (PS1) - I have an import of this for Super Famicom but cannot read Japanese, so I'll be going with the PS1 port, load times be damned. I've attempted to put time into this one before and made it to the second world but never went any further. It's time I try again to knock it out.
Alternates:
If I have time, I may try to tackle a few of these too.
6. Thief Gold
7. Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
8. Brave Fencer Musashi
9. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
10. Silent Hill (I know, I know)
