Realistically, we have all the games one person would ever need and could probably ever play in their lifetime. My backlog right now is shameful - I have around 1100 games and have only beaten around 100 of them, many of them being lengthy RPGs. It's very unlikely I'll ever, ever complete my entire collection, so I'm really not concerned about the way gaming is going or has gone. I think we have all we'll ever need right now :D
You are absolutely correct. And even IF by some miracle I was able to play every video game known to man, I could just begin the cycle anew and go back to games I hadn't played in x amount of years.

So maybe it's just the fact that I need that reassurance that (new) video games will continue to be made? I dunno.

Perhaps I should just be happy I have almost an endless supply of games as it is!

The last handheld system I bought was a GB SP.

I may jump into the year 2004 and pick up a DS. I have a buddy named "Cool Dave" (I know a lot of guys named Dave, "Cousin Dave", "One eye Dave", Limpy Dave", "Dave Norman the Mormon Doorman", "Diddly Dave" who looks like Ned Flanders, etc) but cool Dave is cool. He insists I buy a DS for emulation purposes if nothing else.

What is a decent price for a DS? Like, the cheapest one of 'em.

You should be able to find one for under $50.

I like the older models that are GBA backwards compatible. I prefer to play GBA games on a DS, the button layout feels slightly better to me and I like the increased heft/weight of the DS.

If you stumble across a DS with no charger, you're good because the SP charger is identical (this is true of the early model DS at least, I've only ever owned the launch "phat" edition).

Also, if emulation is your priority a PSP is a much better choice.

But I'm sure there are plenty of DS games you would dig. Contra 4!

If you dont want to play any GBA games, Dsi XL is my favorite of the DS family. They run $50-70 console only. And you will want an Acekard 2i.

Go for a DS Lite. It should cost you $50 at the most, and IMO, it is the very best way to play DS and GBA games. (I only use my GBA SP to play GB and GB Color games.) Also IMO, the DS was the last great classic gaming system, and there are so many great, sprite-based games released for it (such as the aforementioned Contra 4).

I have also read that DS emulation isn't great, and I would go with a PSP if you are looking for a portable emulation machine. (A used PSP in fantastic condition should cost between $50 and $70.)

If you don't care about GBA I'd go for a DSi XL. Or better yet, a 3DS XL so you can get on the amazing 3DS library on top of original DS titles.

echo echo echo

If GBA + DS, then DS Lite.
If DS only, then 3DS XL.
If emulation, then PSP.

If all 3 = true, then PRINT "Happy Times!", go to END

Thanks Duders!

DS Lite seems to be the front runner.

I don't plan on emulation, as I already own a ton of games, but GBA backwards compatibility is a must for me.

DS Lite is annoying if you're playing GBA games on it; the cart sticks out by about half an inch.
