The Super Famicom and SNES have the same number of pin connectors, so no - no device is technically needed.
You can use one of these, but they do have some compatibility issues.
Most people simply cut the tabs on their SNES to get Super Famicom games to fit.

Breaking the tabs out is super easy. Just get yourself a security bit and a #2 philipshead screwdriver. The piece of plastic that the tabs are molded on completely detaches from the rest of the console, if you take it off to break off the tabs not only will you have an easier time but you'll have NO risk in damaging anything. Even if you fuck up that piece of plastic, it's not really needed to make the console functional. It basically just keeps dust out of the console and keeps the area around the pin connector not exposed.
If you're too scared to break the tabs off of the console, you could break the tabs off a Game Genie instead...

Then use the Game Genie as a passthrough device. But if you're doing this, note that the Game Genie doesn't have the out pins used by some enhancement chips (Star Fox, Mario RPG, Star Ocean, etc). You wont be able to play any of those games.
IIRC, the GG just has 4 #1 size philipshead screws to remove.

Yeah, the tabs are super easy in that nothing is really important near the tabs so screwing up won't damage ANYTHING unless you create a huge hole in it. I used a pair of tin scissors to cut it.
Unlike it's younger brother, the N64, where the tabs are a pain in the butt more since screwing up can damage the dust door to it as the door is closer to the tab.

I just used a needle nose pliers and wiggled the tabs back and forth until it completely detached, no damage at all to the console and I didn't have to open it.

Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
Thanks. Ill try it but I'm afraid to break it. Anyways was final fight 2 or 3 good games? Are they worth the prices they are at right now?
Re: How Is Your SNES Gaming Going?
I love beat em ups but I'm leaning towards streets of rage 3 than final fight 2 or 3. I own the other streets of rage.

I am neglecting my SNES, no real reason.. just been busy with my PC and DS games.

Popped in DKC the other day and went through it. It's much more responsive than I remembered.
I'm at the end of DKC2 now, though I'm getting somewhat stuck between the game blanking out Banana coins and not saving my lives.
I haven't played Tropical Freeze yet, but I played Returns last year ... and the DKC games are from my childhood, but I honestly think the Retro ones are better made games. There is a lot of intrinsically unfair aspects to these games that really have no reason to be there besides making the game artificially longer.
