I finally played through Shining Force

Post by Ramatut4001 »

So I finally played through Shining Force on the Genesis. I finished last night. This was the first SRPG I've really played through. I really enjoyed the mechanics and look forward to playing through other games of this type. I have a lot of SRPGs for the PSP in my backlog including Final Fantasy Tactics but I may play through more of the Shining Force games first.

Any fans here? What are your thoughts on this game and others in the series?

My thoughts are, GET SHINING FORCE III. It's the best Sega Saturn game ever and it transcends the Genesis ones by lightyears. If you liked the 16-bit one, SFIII will rock your world.

Oh yeah, and avoid Shining Force CD and the Game Gear ones. SFCD is more of the same minus the ability to explore towns and stuff - it just skips you from one battle to the next, which is utterly lame. The Game Gear version suffers from similar problems.

Shining Force CD is just the first two Game Gear games (only the second was released in the US) on a single disc, and with pretty graphics and sound.

I really enjoyed Shining Force as well. Unfortunately, I can't remember whether I played I or II. I'm going to have to go back and figure out which one I didn't play when I'm done with the Phantasy Stars.

Concerning Shining Force III, are there translation patches available for Scenarios 2 and 3? Or failing that, does Scenario 1 stand on it's own?

I haven't played many other tactical RPGs either. What other titles are recommended?

I've heard that an English translation of scenarios 2 and 3was done and finally implemented, but I haven't kept up on news relating to this project.

Looks like it is done: http://suspendedindusk.com/2008/02/25/s ... n-project/

It's going on the list. Still have to finish Phantasy Star III and IV, Xenogears, and Wasteland before I get to this though.

Shining Force was the first game that made me enjoy an RPG. At that time I had never heard of a Strategy RPG and it seemed so unique and unprecedented, an RPG done correctly. I later learned about SRPGs and played FFTactics Advance but got frustrated because after 200 something missions i would have to spend over an hour gathering an item by redoing old fights to unlock a new mission, and then beating all 300 was pointless because even if you got cid the game was over /end ff rant

So now I finally bought SFII and am really looking forward to playing it. Did you play I and II or just I? If you've only played I, why not play II?

Definately an awesome game. Started my love for the Genesis way back in the day and the Shining Series of games is become one of my favorites of all time. SF1 is stellar. Great battles and boss fights, funny dialog and good story. SF2 adds the ability of free roaming the world.... but with no map? kinda confusing sometimes but still...it's nice to explore and find the extras it has. Definately recomend playing it if you enjoyed the first one, although the music kinda drove me nuts on this one.

SFCD is great too! It has two quests which are remakes of the Game Gear games. If you have both quest completed on your sega cd back up cart (internal memory is too small) you can play a 3rd quest. And yes there are no towns, just stores and a "base" of sorts. But there is a plot, and the dialog is pretty witty at times. I really like it all in all.

I'm getting ready to play SFIII and looking forward to it. I need to mod my saturn so I can play the traslated versions of part 2 & 3.

Shining Force Neo & EXA are more hack and slash dungeon crawlers. Not really in the srpg category. They say it's strategy based combat in real time...I want to try them out, but not really sure if it's my thing.

other shining games-
Shining in the Darkness (genesis) is a great first person dungeon explorer rpg. It's psuedo sequel is Shining The Holy Ark, which is a great 1st person rpg as well. The graphics look pretty dated to me, but it's a fun game.

Shining Wisdom is a zelda-esque 2d action game for the saturn. I only played it for about 30 minutes so far, but and eager to go back to it after I conquer Crusader of Centy.

Shining Tears? (ps2) never played it....looks ok, but got panned by nearly every reviewer out there.

Shining Soul (GBA) hack and slash dungeon crawler. looks ok at best. I heard the 2nd one is better.

Here's a great resource for all things Shining:

If the excel docs are any indication in that FTP, it's nowhere near done.
