Getting back to what Professional said, maybe there will be a day after Lebron has retired where today's kids will want to play a game "as LeBron". Or someone might want to own the only Madden that featured Tim Tebow as an NFL starter.

Do I need my NHL team to be in the Norris Division of the Campbell Conference? Not really, but it sure is neat to see the old divisions. And the old players, old sweaters, old rules (boo two line passes and shootouts), etc.
Sure, maybe, but the chances of that becoming mainstream enough to warrant huge increases in demand and value doesn't seem likely. Like I said before, we haven't seen this sort of thing for the NES/GEN/SNES sports games, and even NHL '94, a very popular game, is still dirt cheap.

Off topic, but it was said: Trophy shelf? I never even thought about grouping my pricey games on one shelf to display. I might have to make one!

I don't think it will happen with the exception of the already rare games. The sport games are mainly played by mainstream people and not people who collect or typically play games. This is because the games do not change from game to game that much. Now, when we get to other sport games such as NBA Jam or the old Blitz games, those were games you could play without really knowing the sports because they were easy to play or were more like arcade games. With the majority of sport games I've played, you have to know how to sport is played from the type of plays that are run to how to operate a team in the other modes.

I once had a room mate who's only games were sport games, that is IT. He never played anything else then sport games. I showed him a few older copies of sport games I had from the Dreamcast. He was interested on them (just seeing who was on what team at the time and all) but aside from a few players that became Hall of Fame players, the majority of people who play sports are not well known after a couple of years.

I also don't think we will ever run out of games for reproductions except in like 50 to 100 years from now. However, if that happens ALL games will go up in value. We still have not only sports but boatloads of other games that sold just as high as sport games (like Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc) so it isn't like we will be taking a game like Earthbound and changing into Secret of Mana 2. There is still a BOATLOAD of used games floating around if a repro needs them that he should be able to use (with the exception of one like Star Fox 2 due to special chips). I don't know the full story since the only thing I can do is replace batteries in my cartage and clean them.
