Retro gaming in the future?

What will happen to retro consoles, collectors and gamers in the future?

Now that more games are becoming viral, like PS network, Nintendo stores, etc.
There's quite the possibility that in 5 years time perhaps, Nintendo develops a handheld console that lets you stream any old gameboy game plus new ones through their network.
Or a any new console (next gen PlayStation especially) develops a cloud system to let you play any old and new game.

The only reason for me to see the retro gaming not dying, is if the viral gaming upgrades the graphics of old games to modern standards.

Because who would want a room full of games and old consoles when you can download the same games you have all in one console?

But in all seriousness, I think retro gaming won't die out with retro gamers, or that old games will be unappealing without "face lifts" or whatever. It's not like people don't listen to Mozart unless it's a techno remix (OMG techno is sooo retro...).

Retro gaming has nothing to do with owning original hardware. If you play retro games, you are a retro gamer, no matter the device.

So, no, I do not see any reason why people would suddenly stop playing good video games based on their age.

It might be more likely that people start playing games per-generation almost exclusively. Just like how some people now will only listen to vinyl, even though they're only 20.

It's not really about re-experiencing old memories, once something makes any sort of come back it turns into something else. If retro-games never had the resurgence in the 00s, then I don't think this would be the case.

This weekend I watched the film Them! (1954) and a few months ago I watched The Mummy (1932). Old films haven't died, so why should old games? Of course there won't be as many NES gamers in 2064 as there are today, but there will always be some gamers who seek out the past.

This couldn't be more true(though probably not the same as playing on a newer console from the same manufacturer). I just hope most of them though go to playing on their phones or even digital and let people like me have the games if they're just going to play on their phones anyways...

This is not true at all.

Plenty of folks don't have access to original hardware due to price, scarcity, whatever. There's no "requirement" to being a retro gamer other than playing retro games. Doesn't matter whether you own 10,000 games or 0.

I think with everything able to emulated it will never die. There probably won't be a 20-something in 50 years playing Rising Zan , but the classics will always be available. This is only made more feasible with the new generation consoles having the ability to download classic games.
