The only solution I can see is Ukraine splitting in two, and having the western part join Nato and the EU, and the eastern part join Russia (coupled of course with major economic sanctions against Russia). It's unfortunate. All the people in Kiev wanted was a country with rule of law and without so much corruption, but Putin can't stand those values as they might spread to Russia and affect his rule.

Admittedly Kiev's governmental administrative buildings are located on the western side of the river, so splitting the country along those lines would likely be the best decision if they really do seek to split the nation in half. Allow any Ukrainian citizens on the western side to head to the eastern side and become Russian citizens if they desire, and then begin a general purge of pro-Russian government, military, and security officials. Also, screen any refugees coming from eastern Ukraine heavily to ensure they're not really Russian spies...which is what many of them will likely be.

No no no. Most of the regions actually prefer to be a part of Ukraine. The problem is all they propaganda they have heard, like that they will be forced to stop speaking Russian.Ack wrote: You mean split the country along the Dneiper River, including splitting Kiev in two?
It's partially the fault of the government, because when they toppled the previous president they tried to remove Russian as a second official language, but it got voted down in parliament.
Anyway, you could have a region by region referendum, but the problem is this is Putin we are talking about, so we can't have a honest result, unless it's in favor of Russia.

I don't know what is worse, the fact that those things are happening in Russia, or that many like minded people live in my country (basically the entire far right / right sector which is made up of a disgusting mix of nationalists who are also religious fanatics, but only when it comes to intolerance).
Anyway we shouldn't mind. This "Soviet Union" will collapse like the first. I understand the masses are morons, but really the elite should have a better understanding of why the USSR collapsed in the first place.
Anyway, maybe we have to put up with some extra pain now, but I'm pretty sure Russia will go the way of the Ottoman empire. Collapsed and broken into pieces.

You have those in Greece, too?

Given enough time every empire/union/federation ends up breaking up eventually. It's just after the Cold War® everyone thought we reached the End of History™, whereas it's always been about the Clash of Civilisations© and regional interests to varying degrees, with Black SwanZeroAX wrote:Anyway, maybe we have to put up with some extra pain now, but I'm pretty sure Russia will go the way of the Ottoman empire. events suddenly shifting the course of history in unforeseen directions.Ukraine was always compromised anyway. They booted one corrupt regime only to elect in another equally corrupt one. They should have sorted themselves out before this inevitable mess.

Hahah, yeah. The question I have in response to your statement about Ukraine sorting themselves out would be "Could they have?" Admittedly this is a nation that is already riddled with Russian spies and supporters, along with pro-EU sympathizers and some American military and intelligence officials who visit specifically to study Russia. I don't think the country could have addressed these problems without inevitably tipping one way or the other, and with that tipping the other side would inevitably become upset. I agree they were compromised, but I don't think they ever really stood a chance.
