Your friend can't help you unless he is the one hiring.

Tips: Stand up and pace/walk during your phone interview (unless you breathe like a podcaster). Smile when you talk.

You don't think that it would make a difference, but it does. For a couple of reasons:

"Think on your feet" means something. When you walk around you are more engaging, which means a lot to an employer. It gives ya spunk. But if you are a heavy breather, sit your ass down.

Whether you realize it or not, your voice does change with your facial expressions. Even a forced smile can add some enthusiasm to your inflection.

You've got one shot, so make it count.

And this is "Mom advice", but take the interview for what it is. If you are excited about the job, be excited. Play off as much as you can from the phone interviewer's voice. A lesson I had to learn is that if the interviewer is being combative, fight back.

Example:

Interviewer: I don't see how catering experience plays into the sales of blah blah blah...

Me: I don't see how you can find any job experience is irrelevant, as all experience is relevant to the molding of a professional.

One last piece of advice:

You're fucking Superman and they are idiots if they don't hire you.

I admire everyone who is humble. It's a quality I adore. But that quality isn't going to get you shit when it comes to getting a job. Act like you already have the job. =

All of this is absolutely 100% correct! Great advice. I just had phone interview, which led to an in person interview and all of these things happened. I talk with my hands, whether I am on the phone or not and I always have an, "eyebrows-up," approach to talking. My eyebrows are very expressive and I keep them up and it makes me sound really engaged!

During my in person interview, there was some combat about the relationship between a retail management job and a shipping coordinator and I went on a diatribe about the lessons you learn, not only from work, but from life and detailed why.

When they ask about weaknesses, when you state one, talk about how that the fact that you are aware of that weakness, you compensate for them and that you are actively working to overcoming those obstacles.

fingers crossed for everyone in their job endeavors, as it seems we are all going through that transition!

1) Two-handed braggart. Kidding.

Great advice you should pay attention to. Gesticulate even if people can't see you. It gets you involved in the conversation. Again, you want to be engaging. It's really easy to pick up on, even on the horn.

2) No offense, but I'd stay away from any and all diatribes. Anything said negative will be seen as, well negative. "What I would have liked to change" will always get you more points than "What was wrong". I'm sure Bogus meant what I'm saying. It is completely acceptable to say "My supervisor did X, and I would have done Y". Then explain what Y would be. This further engages the interviewer.

3) Weaknesses. Don't ask the internet for this one. You have 'em, but don't put 'em out on the table. Instead, use a STAR approach(works for me at least):

S)Situation
T)Task
A)Action
R)Result

Interviewers want yo to tell them a story. This helps tell them your personality. If you are a cog in a unit, no worries, but if you want to impress someone, show some personality.

So for me, if I was asked if I had a weakness I would say:

Situation: "I'm honest to a fault"

-Explain

"When asked by the CEO what we could be doing better, I told him. I didn't feel like I went over the President's head, as the CEO asked.

Task-

-Write me a white paper on this.

Action- I wrote a white paper

Result- "My CEO read my white paper and agreed that funds could be more used in a more proficient manner.

Tell a story, don't give an answer. Build a bridge if you can. A-Z.

Having a hands free device in this situation helps a ton as well. Plus I would have a note pad on a counter you can walk to where you can take notes and have some bullet points written that you are worried about forgetting. I do this for all my calls.

I think it would work in this situation and I do this after all my sales calls, but after you get done with the call within 5 minutes answer these 4 questions on a piece of paper.
1. What did I do well?
2. What could I have done better?
3. What lesson have I learned?
4. What will I do differently next time?
I do this after any face to face meeting as well, within 5 minutes of getting in my car. Always room to improve.

Perhaps the first bullet point informs the second?

While you may be a bit over the top there, I agree with the sentiment. Try working overnights like me. Not only do people knock on your door trying to sell you things, but then you have the meter reader showing up at what would be a "normal" time, packages being delivered, people outside with snowblowers, lawn mowers, kids playing basketball, etc etc etc.

And while people will sometimes call the cops on their neighbors making too much noise at night (and by "sometimes" I mean "All the damn time, really people, get a damn life, it's a dog, it barks"), try doing that during daylight hours and see how far you get.

Good thing I'm a relatively heavy sleeper.

I bought Ranger X and it's horrible, wasn't even worth the $2 I paid.

I didn't catch to eclipse but the sky has been flashing white for the past few hours. I keep thinking it's my eyes and try to readjust them but it just keeps flashing in 2 second intervals. I can't get my GF to look at it because she says she's afraid of aliens so I can't figure out if it's really happening or not.
