What Is The Scariest Game You've Ever Played?

I remember the first time I played it. I was like 5 years old. Chose Mario. Went outside the door to level 1-1. Got killed by a Shy Guy. Game restarted and I spent the next hour wandering around the hills of the first screen, terrified to chance the hellish world beyond that door again.

Thief II: The Metal Age by a significant margin.

I didn't find Project Zero to be scary, though, it's just another game in which some creepy grey-brown dude appears out of nowhere and says "GOTCHA!" while you wonder why it takes the player character several seconds to turn around.

It's a fine game but I didn't think it was scary at all.

Has anyone here been lucky enough to find a Silent Hill arcade machine and play through it? It's a rail shooter, and supposedly has a ton of Silent Hill-esque creepiness and startles. I wanted to know if it was worth seeking out or even worth eventually seeking to own the machine? (I have the rom, it doesn't work super well on any hardware I own)

Yeah, actually, same here. I found Dead Space unnerving at first but after the second chapter or so, it pretty much become rote "shoot this limb and stomp that body." Necromorphs are surprisingly easy once you figure out their weaknesses: shoot the leg, shoot the arm, they're probably dead but if not shoot the other arm, done. If more than one, shoot the leg out from under them all first and then take your time finishing them all off. Once again, kneecapping proves its effectiveness.
