Probably a bit of both. What we tend to see as a British accent today was deliberately popularized, for example. However, you also get dialects that aren't intentional, but arise anyway.

You probably also see some technical aspects creep in there. For example, if an actor needs to be able to project into an auditorium, or in a way that whatever microphone tech they had in 1939 picked up well, it could also be a reason.
One very noticeable thing is the lack of foul language
I'd chalk this up a lot more to Hollywood standards than actual day-to-day speech, however, it would also generally be part of polite conversation, even today.

Not sure about that. Language certainly plays a factor in film (especially back then) but there are still tons of families that don't swear (around certain company). It's a matter of respect to a lot of people.

Sure, but with regard to whether that's how people actually spoke or not, the restrictions at the time would have heavily influenced what was presented on film. That's all I mean.

I love how in all the movies/games/TV shows, men who get stuck in the jungle/deserted island, grow a beard and long hair cause they don't have a way to shave/cut it, but all the women somehow manage to find make up and a way to wax their legs.

Speaking from experience, fire removes hair just fine. :P

So as someone who goes years in between keeping up with shows on TV... I might turn on the living room TV throughout the days on the weekends for background noise, and all I ever see are commercials for prescription meds. FOR EVERYTHING!

As someone who's kind of been there done that I can totally get behind that some people might have some chemical imbalance or lack something the body should be producing, but this looks a bit outrageous and it's like 90% of the commercials I ever see. Like, it's almost comical? Got boogers, take this? What's next?

It's disturbing.

Fox News is worth watching for the commercials alone. It's all prescription meds (See our ad in Golf Magazine), gold, neo-survivalist "survive the impending crash!" nonsense, and my personal favorite - catheters!!! They know their demographic.

Speedtest exists purely to prove your theoretical max. Steam is going to be being accessed by a lot more people at the same time, and have no reason to let you get unrestricted speed, they gain little to nothing if they do.

Sucks, but true.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Is it considered British accent? I would like to note that even in Mad Men they speak that style to a certain extent which makes me wonder when the change happened. Reading or hearing dialogue from that era can be easily identified its from another time. Where I live, older recorded dialogue is almost identical if not exactly identical to everyday speech today.

I actually get faster speed from my Speedtest.net . I choose a server in L.A. , thats almost on the other side of planet earth to me. I get around 1.5mb to 3.5mb . My ISP says its 10mb (I am guessing its 10mb within the country I reside, which is useless since most of the internet servers is in other continents) .

yet I get amazing speeds on Torrent (1000kbps) and so it does on PS3 store. Other places like Apple, Steam, and Youtube are much slower. I am guessing they limit the speeds on purpose depending on what service you use.

@ZeroAX

i never noticed women with makeup in such circumstances . I thought they all looked dirty in Lost.
