I love the genre but I haven't played a lot from it. From the ones I have played I guess I would say Resident Evil in parts (the dogs jumping through the glass, and when those little green monkeys/imps were in the game. You could hear their claws scratching the floor when they were walking. Not to mention that I had missed the Magnum on my first playthrough, so my only option was to run from them. Of course, they could jump a country mile).

And I don't know if I'd say Dead Space scared me per se, but it did have some creepy moments. I LOVED the overall atmosphere of that game; Hearing the various sounds in the ship, not knowing if a necromorph was around the corner, not knowing if the dead body at your feet was going to jump up and attack you, etc.

Dead Space 2 had a few parts as well, but not nearly as much as the first game.

The first Silent Hill is probably the most disturbing gaming experience I've had. Playing that in the dark with the only light coming from my old 20" CRT, while it's raining outside, with headphones on, was genuinely a terrifying experience beyond any Resident Evil jump scares I'd had before. I think it's the only game that actually gave me nightmares.

I'm so glad there are a lot of Fatal Frames in here... I played that game for about 20mins and couldn't take any more ;-; (I might have to try again with the lights on next time...)

Other than that, I've played Eternal Darkness but I couldn't get very far so I don't know if I would find that scary or not... I don't even think I got past the first puzzle now that I think about it ._.

The original Dead Space gets my vote as well - try playing it in a dark room alone with the sound cranked up and you'll see what I mean. I actually got so creeped out my first time playing that I couldn't finish it, just stopped and moved on to something else. I beat it a few months back and consider it a personal victory.

Dead Space 2 is awesome you should really check it out it is quite massive compared to the original and the story is much better.

Just thought of another game that scared the crap out of me The Thing. Was one of the first survival horror games I played on the PS2 don't think I ever went past the second level.

I have an odd relationship with survival horror games. I really like the concept of survival horror, and have had a lot of fun with the ones I've played. But I'm always having the most fun when I'm not scared. I guess it kinda ruins the point, but the survival part is what I like most in survival horror. I only enjoy the horror part in so much as it effects the atmosphere, I don't enjoy it so much when I'm actually feeling frightened.

But to stay on topic, I suppose my scariest moment would be a tie between Amnesia: the Dark Descent and Resident Evil 4. The part in Amnesia where you have to walk through a room filled waist high with water while being attacked by an invisible enemy scared the shit outta me. And the part in Resident Evil 4 where you have to go through that garden filled with dogs still frightens me despite having beaten the game many many times. I have a bit of a fear of dogs, so that part really got to me.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

I've actually beaten all of them in the last few months, though three was a let-down compared to the first two. One game I'm very excited for is Alien: Isolation - if they can pull it off, that could be a real gem.

Afraid of monster comes to mind. It's a half life 1 mod where your a patient who is addicted to some kind of pills and start seeing wierd stuff around you. The game is HARD you have your usual flashlight but it runs on batteries and you must find fresh one constantly and the enemies are OP... seriously they take a lot of shot to put down they almost teleport in front of you and can kill you very easily... but i think the game has diferent dificulty settings. I could bring myself to finish the game... sometimes i think on trying it again to check if it was really that scary.

Half Life 2's Ravenholm and various headcrab monsters have always disturbed and scared me- but I've always been afraid of weird backward-talk, and the game isn't scary, otherwise. Silent Hill 2 would get my vote- the rhythmic scraping metal noises and that scene where
pyramid head is abusing that other monster
as well as the
creepy giant box head puzzle
did a number on me. But... I'm gonna go with Silent Hill: Downpour- for the first few hours (like, before you get to the town) the environments and even some of the pre-scripted events were super disturbing and the way the gameplay was paced reminded me 100% of my nightmares- there's a place you have to go, and you know something terrifying/life-threatening is going to be there, but you can't avoid it.

That all changes once you get into town, and there's more of an open world and survival aspect, but there're still some frightening moments (the sobbing basement, anyone?)

The story and characters in Downpour are cheesy, and the gameplay is rough, but I'm pretty sure I've not been that scared playing a game before or since. I really freaked out when
I was in the mine, and went into that little room, and examined the 3 mannequins wearing mining gear behind a locked gate- and one of them slumped over, revealing that it was a dead body with its limbs tied. I backtracked to the room later, in search of health, and the dead guy was standing up again... I actually yelled.
Oh, and another moment comes to mind- the Mansion in Timesplitters: Future perfect- you get to a point where there are these 3-4 rooms with all kinds of creepy homages and messages written everywhere- and the Deerhaunter boss is brutal and speedy and all tendons and bones- creepy. Thank god for that hole in the wall.
