Capcom single handily brought back the fighting game genre to mainstream gamers, I think they deserve a bit more credit than that. Street Fighter 4, Monster Hunter and Marvel vs Capcom 3 are all significant games.Xeogred wrote:
Last gen (PS3/360) I'd say. Comparing their library of games on the PS2 to what they put out last gen... gold to poo.
I liked RE5, especially after replaying it a few months back, it's actually aged well (still a lesser RE title, but good game nonetheless). Lost Planet 1-2 I enjoyed. Throw in the NES Megaman 9-10 throwbacks, and that's all that comes to mind for me. I know they have a good pull with Monster Hunter apprently... but still. What else did they do? Oh Dead Rising. More zombies. Yay.
They also still made good DMC games and they made the Ace Attorney series last generation. I think the last few years have made people forget that from 2005-2010, they still made a ton of good games (and 2005-2010 is 7th gen, which again people also seem to forget).
While they did neglect Megaman, I'm grateful they at least brought the guy back to his "8 bit" glory. Megaman 9 was awesome, and it was pretty much out of nowhere, same as SF4. Honestly, with the millions of Megaman games that have been made, them not making anymore for a few years really is not that big of a deal to me. I mean really, how many Megaman games are there, 30?
I mean Capcom does try to throw people bones here, they remade Duck Tales which was pretty cool. They also tried new things with Bionic Commando and Strider, for better or worse (probably worse
Capcom is going down hill, but honestly, they're more than just Resident Evil and Megaman, a lot more.

Re: More bad news for Capcom
Seems like Capcom's golden age was the late 80s/early 90s with their classic arcade titles + 8/16-bit games. I don't pay too much attention to them these days. The Monster Hunter series is pretty cool. I couldn't give a monkey's toss about their terrible Westernized "horror" games or their 10,000 versions of Street Fighter.
As for Square Enix, I expect them to keep cranking out solid handheld titles while stinking up the home consoles. Final Fantasy XV looks like quite the pile. First game in the series I have absolutely zero intention of playing.

On the plus side, they've realized that western gamers do still enjoy a good traditional JRPG after seeing how well Bravely Default did.BoneSnapDeez wrote:As for Square Enix, I expect them to keep cranking out solid handheld titles while stinking up the home consoles. Re: More bad news for Capcom
generally most "big" devs from japan lost most of its fans during the ps3/360 generation.. square, konami, sega, capcom, maybe tecmo and namco .. they just haven't been as great as they all once were.
the sad truth is realistically, I don't really see them getting back at their feet anytime soon.

Re: More bad news for Capcom
I guess in the end you could probably turn it around and blame Activision, EA, etc, all the big Western publishers, the AAA business model and such. This all probably didn't help, but I think a lot of these big Japanese companies had it coming anyways (lots of major key devs/creators jumping ship nowadays so they can have some creative control and freedom again).
It's undeniable to me personally, but my favorite gaming eras run from the NES to the PS2... when Japan dominated the console scene. If they stayed on top and ruled the market, maybe Capcom would have never decided to outsource nearly everything and "Westernize" their approach as they did all over the place this last gen (and they pretty much flat out said these things themselves for awhile there).
Maybe that's all another debate.

Re: More bad news for Capcom
Capcom's problem is that they are currently too big. They are trying to compete in too many markets against too many AAA publishers. The US market is the largest, but is currently dominated by US and EU developers with PC-derived game styles. Capcom simply hasn't adjusted well. Their options are either to do what Sega and Square are doing and publish more games by US dev houses that appear to western markets, or retrench, shrink a bit in size and expenditure, and go back to that core market of JPN- and retro-styled games.
