Why all the reseller hate? (+Poll)

I voted the I don't fucking care option, cause I honestly didn't think of it in a bad way.

In my mind resellers are gamers who need the money/want to get rid of games they don't want anymore, or shops trying to make a living when new game sales just don't bring enough profit.

But then again I read the stories about flippers and I went crazy. Specially that guy who took the Master System from the other guy's hand. If this happened to me in some other place other than America I don't know if I could keep my cool.


But should we really care this much? These guys don't have a real job and end up doing something like this. And as soon as the bubble pops, they'll be fucked. Let's just stop trying to complete our collections, play the games we have now, and wait for prices to drop.



To be honest, I'm more angry at gamers who collect games just to collect them. I constantly slim my collection down (by either selling them, or most of the time, donating to the racketboy christmas charity), because I have so many games I just know I will never play again. Simply put, I'd rather give it away to someone else to enjoy, than have it collecting dust.

you make a great point. I think I can sum up the reason I feel the way I do very simply: I'm all for people making money, and doing whatever they need to in order to make said money. But the re-seller mentality that I've come to know is that you have to be a giant dick in order to be a re-seller. What ever happened to just being nice? I was in GameStop the other day, and some "Chad" bought a copy of Xenoblade and on his way out, hollered to the employees, "HA HA! You guys sold this to me for only half of what it sells for on Ebay! I'm gonna double this!"

I asked the employees if that makes them mad, and they said it happens all the time.

THAT.... right there. It happens all the time. In GameStop. C'mon now. I live in a pretty small town, but we have enough DB re-sellers running around doing that, that it happens ALL THE TIME in GameStop?

I voted "It's Complicated." Reason being that I go out there to collect games and build a nice collection while taking an hour or two every so often to go down in my basement and just retro it up. On the other hand yeah, if I find games I'm not interested in and I've taken the time to have a good feel for prices off the top of my head, I will buy stuff to sell on sites like Racketboy and NintendoAge to offset what I spend on the games I really want.

I don't see the harm in it. As for being a collector that let's games 'collect dust', that's a matter of opinion. Half the fun for me is just hanging out and popping in 4-5 old games in a row and finding out how good or bad they are. Either way it's a good time, and there's nothing that says I have to complete every single one to validate owning them.

i voted good on 'em because everyone here likes a deal. don't be an asshole, whether you are buying to flip, buying for trade bait, or buying for your collection. just don't be a dick to people when buying and selling.

I know sellers that are more than fair with their prices and trades. I go back to these shops regularly, the same way I go back to the local deli, or my favorite bakery. Because they strike me as honest merchants who invest time and effort into their passion.

I also know sellers in the area who seem slimy and who apparently have no interest in games or the gaming world, other than the total profit they can make from it. When I get this feeling about any merchant, no matter what industry they represent, I generally never step back in their shop again.

I really don't buy online so I can't comment too much there. I'm just not into paying those types of prices for something I started as a "cheap" hobby. That's just me though. If others want to pay ebay prices, that's their prerogative. I have nothing against how others choose to spend their money. It's a personal choice.

Either way it's a good time, and there's nothing that says I have to complete every single one to validate owning them.

Nope there isn't, but would you keep games you don't like? I remember I bought the collector's edition of The Last Story sealed for cheap(er) than it usually sold. I opened the game, played it, did not like it at all, and went straight online to sell it.

I managed to sell it at the same exact price I bought it. It was opened, but pretty much still new, and the price was still lower than what 98% of stores were charging.

So I managed to make a fellow gamer happy, I managed to make back the money to spend on another game, and I managed to free up some space.

What would have been the point of keeping a game I never will enjoy playing? Just having more things in my possession? Somehow that doesn't sound healthy.

It's my life mentality in general, only buy/keep the things you "need". And in this case for me it's games you enjoyed at least once, and which you plan to replay some time in the future, even if it's 20 years from now.

Sure and I don't see anything wrong with that. Anything worth more than $10-15 I'm playing thoroughly believe me. On the other hand I do have dozens of $2-10 games that I'll play just to see what they're all about. I might come back to them, or maybe never again. I keep them because I do like collecting. If I were to sell them all I'd be doing is selling them to someone just like me. For example, I don't think anyone is looking for a copy of Fun 'n Games on Genesis for the gameplay.
