bought a faulty WII it apparently overheats........

hi members , i bought a faulty WII off ebay a few days ago and received it today


in the description it says it overheats , im trying to get it to overheat and go into standby or freeze but it is standing strong


ive ran some tests ill list them below.........


1 hour and 15 mins with a different PSU , no problems

straight after

1 hour and 15 mins with a different PSU and WII Sports in the Drive , no problems


i had a nap and woke hours later and ran a new test...........


3 hours 30 mins the PSU it came with and WII Sports in the Drive , no problems



ive read from googling that when a WII overheats it puts its self in standby , and this usually happens within a hour

another symptom is that the WII will freeze

also i must say the Fan works great thats the first thing i looked for and the heatsink and shell are very clean , i gave the heatsink a burst of compressed air and no dust came out.


the WII has a bunch of online channels so its been online before although in the settings the connection is default im thinking they removed the config for security.

a lot of people who go online with their WII enable WiiConnect24 , im thinking the previous owner had it enabled thus causing the overheating

along with that they possibly had it in a confined space causing heat build up , for all my tests ive had the top shell off.



what i want to do with this WII is softmod it but i want to make sure its stable before doing it as if it shuts down during flashing the NAND im in strife.




what do you guys think of this situation ?

So you have a Wii that someone on eBay said was overheating, but you can't replicate it? Sounds like you lucked out to me!

The first few generations of Wii would overheat when they were put on standby if the WiiConnect24 setting was left on. You can tell this is happening if the light goes amber when you turn it off instead of red. The usual victim would be the GPU burning out.

To keep it safe, just go into internet settings and disable WiiConnect24. When you do that, the machine will automatically transition to completely off (red light) when you turn it off.

The only other issue the Wii had with heating was that the back vents were prone to getting choked with dust and there aren't really any alternate ducts. That's a compressed air solution.

yea i cant get it to overheat , ive actually started a new test straight after the 3 hour one where ive put the top shell back on..........waiting to see what happens

i have it checked out if WiiConnect24 is enabled and its not , also ive checked the vents and they are in fantastic condition (no dust build up)

I wonder if maybe your seller had a problem at some point in the past, fixed it, and decided to go ahead and cover their butts in case it was still an issue.

here is some of the description below

Up for action today is a faulty Nintendo WII console. It overheats, but this may not be the only problem as my tests are not exhaustive.
It is sold with the cords, a nun chuck and a stand, it is not sold with a sensor.

before opening the WII i looked at the white tabs where they cover some of the screws and they were in great condition , to me it looked like they havent been tampered with or have any damage from a X-acto knife

If it was a pawnshop they probably just ran it for a little bit and felt it was warm.

The description was just a precaution since returns can cost a fair deal especially since the seller has to pay for the return shipping if the item is "not as described".

still no problems , seems like this thing is ready to softmodded.



im thinking this thing did overheat at some point causing alarm but it overheated because it was in a confined space or WiiConnect24 was enabled or both

i successfully softmodded the WII today without it shutting down



also i bought another faulty WII a couple of days ago , got it for a $1 !


cant wait to get it and work on it , it hasnt been shipped yet but i expect it Monday / Tuesday next week
