Another Problem for XBOX360 besides RROD!!!
This article was from Kotaku. It concerns the disc scratching problem of the xbox360 being a design flaw by Microsoft just to save 50 cents. I am planning to buy a Japanese system soon. First, I have my worries about the RROD. I was finally going to buy one with the new Jasper chips. Now I have to worry about this. My question is if anyone knows if Microsoft has fixed this problem in the newer systems or not. If they haven't, then it looks like I will probably have to wait another year or so until they do fix it. My Japanese Shmups can just sit on the shelves by themselves. Dammit!!! It is as if Microsoft doesn't want me to buy one of their system.

Actually, if you're willing to buy a few pieces of rubber, you can fix the disc scratching deal...it's not that difficult.

i believe this problem is only caused when u change position of console while the disc is in?
isn't that what the kotaku article says?
i personally don't have a 360 but i imagine theres no need to move it while playing??

"Partly because fixing it would have increased load times"
What would you rather have, quicker load times or the ability to move to console whilst it's running (which you shouldn't do anyway)? It's not like the 360 is used in a car or anything. There's absolutely no reason to move the 360 whilst it's on.
A friends PS2 also mangled a DVD of his when it was moved whilst running. It's not exclusive to the 360.

God damn I hate the internet.

Llama posted their fix to the problem with small rubber spacers to be placed in the DVD drive a while ago IIRC. Coincides with this solution coming from the horses mouth. My 360 has a few more months for the 3 year RLOD warranty. So after that is up, it's going to get a good cleaning, new cooling fans, x clamp replacement, a possibly rubber pads?

Are people just idiots? Who the hell is going to move their 360 while it's running!?
That's like putting a fucking warning on knifes to tell you to hold it by the fucking handle.
Or slapping a warning on a crystal vase saying "caution do not drop, may cause damage".
This is also one of the reasons I don't read Kotaku any more. Too many 'news' articles stating the fucking obvious.

"Prompted by consumer reaction to their February 2007 report, Kassa performed several tests with Xbox 360s from customers who claimed their Xbox had the problem. Kassa stabilized these consoles and positioned them at a location remote from contact by anyone. The results of the laboratory conditions test revealed that one of the nine tested Xbox 360s had spontaneously scratched a disc after five hours of gaming. The consoles were also tested standing upright, and the test revealed that three of the nine tested Xbox 360s significantly scratched discs. The video of the complete investigation, meticulously documenting the methodology, and all the relevant details of the tests, was made ready to be aired in April 14, 2007." From Wikipedia.
People need to consider accidental bumps and etc. but the fact is that it scratches disc even if the console wasn't moving during gameplay. This was confirmed by many XBOX360 users. All I want to know is if Microsoft has fixed this problem or not, even though it only cost an extra 50 cents. Can someone confirm or know anything about this???

I love how when 360 first launched, red rings and disc scratching reports were popping up all over, and all the little fanboys immediately leap to the conclusion that these people where just mishandling their machines. The same thing happened with PS1 and PS2 respectively. No one wants to believe it's a legitimate design flaw until they suffer from it themselves.
Fortunately, the failure rates of the 360 are so catastrophically high, that no sane person gives microsoft the benefit of the doubt anymore.
Unfortunately, I still find people who tell me I just treat my playstations poorly, and that's why they break.
