Mechanics wise the game is pretty bare bone, I don't understand how the game has bad controls. They're responsive, and they actually give your character a lot more jumping ability than he needs for the majority of leaps that you need in the game. Climbing is barely any more different from walking/running.

So...what exactly is the problem with the controls?
the horse moves like a real horse, meaning that the moment you input a direction, it does not immediately move in that direction. When climbing a colossus and it moves, your person's movement is interrupted to run the, "Hanging on," animation. I have no problem with these issues, but those are some of the problems I could see people having with the controls.

But they're consistent and match well with the animations. I don't get it at all. The horse thing, it's like....what? It moves perfectly fine and it does exactly what it is meant to do. Other than that...the horse is largely omitted from the vast majority of fights, which is why these complaints are just bizarre.

Also, horses do not turn sharply in most games. Horses move the same way in Zelda and Dynasty Warriors just off the top of my head.

I can see someone saying SOTC isn't fun, but the controls? It's like saying Braid or Portal has bad controls or something. It's a puzzle game ~_~. I'm genuinely curious to what people don't like about the controls.

They may be bizarre to you, but I'm sure they make a lot of sense to the complainer! I hate the controls in OoT, and my friends are like "stfu this game was revolutionary with z-targeting and shit" and I was like "yeah, well, z-targeting is the worst and I hate it". That and I find the rest of the controls to be terribly clunky/inconsistent anyway. I haven't encountered many that agree, but that's how I feel about it, anyway.

Controls AND Camera are my (minor) issues with the game.

For the controls, like someone mentioned, there is slow response time for the horse. The movements in general feel slow and "sluggish", and they don't seem tight or ultra responsive. I hit forward on my analog stick and the horse doesn't move....then I hit X, and it takes a minute for Agro to respond. The slow response time means I end up mashing X to overcompensate so by the time the input registers I'm hauling ass when I just wanted short gallop. I never played OoT (well, never beat it....only played it for a short while) so I can't compare the horse riding to that.

Swinging your sword only has 1 movement. No swinging down, or up. Kinda annoying when I'm trying to slash those lizards and I can't tell if I have hit them until they turn belly up. I've tried to shoot them with the bow (which seems to have unlimited arrows) but controls on that are wacky too. Holding and then releasing square shoots my arrows? Ok, I can get use to that I guess. The normal/inverted camera is a little too senstive in bow aiming mode (which is odd considering it's the opposite on the horse). If I hit up on the analog stick, the camera goes waaaay up. It takes me a few minutes just to steady the camera and by then the lizard is running off and I'm like "Fuck it, I'll just hack at it with my sword".

Climbing the Colossus is another annoyance, but I'll chalk that up more to the camera than the controls (although still not perfect). The camera seems to reset at the most opportune times. Not to mention I have to overcorrect my climbs sometimes because I've hit an invisible barrier somewhere on the Colossus. I like the gameplay aspect of the Colossus trying to shake you off (as I'm holding on for dear life) but often the camera will start to pan down like I've fallen off and then reset back to my position on the Colossus.

Maybe these issues were fixed in the PS3 HD version of the game? I don't know. I wanted to play this game on its original release, so I knew that I would have to temper my expectations to go with the version.

And really, these are MINOR nitpicks. I usually chalk up controls/camera with the overall game control scheme, and this is no different. The title of this thread is "Unpopular gaming opinion" and this is simply....my opinion. You don't have to agree with it. Hell, there are games that I LOVE and people criticize for what I feel are totally asinine or non-existent (IMO) reasons.

I killed the 7th Colossus last night. And while the controls/camera issues are still there, I am getting more use to them the more I play. This game is fun. Real fun. I just don't feel it's the masterpiece a lot of people claim it to be.

Walls of text aside, id love to see a Zelda game with the same graphics and control style as SoTC.

I agree with the camera, but it is strange you group them together as if they are one entity.
For the controls, like someone mentioned, there is slow response time for the horse.
Is there really? When do you ever need to make a sharp turn in SOTC with your horse? Has there ever been a fight that you really felt like if your horse could move better, you would be having more fun?
The movements in general feel slow and "sluggish", and they don't seem tight or ultra responsive.
hm..I guess. I'm going to just say, the PS2 version has very bad framerate problems, so perhaps it is not the control of the character but literally the game slowing down.
I hit forward on my analog stick and the horse doesn't move....then I hit X, and it takes a minute for Agro to respond.
I think I see what you're saying.

Swinging your sword only has 1 movement. No swinging down, or up. Kinda annoying when I'm trying to slash those lizards and I can't tell if I have hit them until they turn belly up.
What lizards?

It only has one movement because you don't need to swing, down or up. It's like playing a 2D Zelda and saying he can only attack straight, there's no need for precision. The attacks you do in SOTC are about stabbing a giants soft belly (for the most part, no spoilers kekeke).
I've tried to shoot them with the bow (which seems to have unlimited arrows) but controls on that are wacky too. Holding and then releasing square shoots my arrows? Ok, I can get use to that I guess. Man, I really don't remember this lizard fight >.>

I do agree with the archery, the inverted deal is tricky to get used too.

Is it really necessary to state it is your opinion, I am well aware - hence why I asked you to elaborate.
I just don't feel it's the masterpiece a lot of people claim it to be.
It's not.

Whoah....you don't know about the lizards? What about the fruit?

Putting my explanation in spoilers, just in case.
In the game, there are various glowing lizards that you can kill and collect to increase your stamina. There are also fruit in trees that you can collect to increase your overall health. These are essential in order to access some super secret areas.

Had no idea about them. I'm in the business of giant slaying, if I wanted to eat fruit and kill lizards I'd retire and move to Florida.

Haha..that's ok. during my first playthrough, I had no idea they existed either!

What? I'm on my third play-through and I never heard about this? God dammit haha. You learn something new every day.

And the game really is a masterpiece, in my opinion.
